More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  Beautiful takedown ... (6+ / 0-)

... Obama's going to win, so "too little too late" is not applicable, but I am disapointed this hasn't been hammered on; and disappointed but not surprised the MSM hasn't made this plain. In the wonderful wacky world we live in, if it's coming from a campaign, it's automatically suspect. Of course, if it's coming from a Dem campaign, it's frivolous because it's all he-said/she-said; if from a Repug campaign, it's all "questions" raised by "some."

    Balance!

Also, it would also be nice if "moderates" and true "conservatives" were listening. Things would be different in America.

Anyways, we're going to win. Forward!

taxes and fees designed to soak the poor and middle class while leaving the rich unscathed are a Regressive staple.

The beauty of it (from their point of view) is that keeping taxes heavy on the working class makes middle income folk hate taxation and hungry for Regressive tax cut rhetoric, and makes them suckers who'll support any tax cut even if it's just for the rich and not for them.

made such a big deal in the debates about how Massachusetts education was so great when he got into office and about how he didn't raise college tuition as governor.... but as other dKosers have pointed out, in Massachusetts the bulk of state college costs come not from tuition, but from FEES.  And in fact Romney raised those fees by a whole bunch.

I don't care whether Patrick did the same thing.  Patrick would never be the brazenly lying lout that Romney is.  It's the outsized mendacity of the man that makes what he does different from someone else's conformity with SOP.  There is nothing standard about Romney-- he's in a class by himself when it comes to being a complete and total dick.

Its just part of his core dishonesty. As an attorney in the Boston suburbs who does real estate closings, I remember when a standard closing cost consumers who were buying a house about $125 in recording costs at the Registry of Deeds.

Under Romney those same papers, just a deed, single mortgage and MLC went up to $368 to record and remains there until this day. Basically it tripled.

On more complex closings where there are more documents to record, it went up even more (for example a condo would require additional documents) It hits a lot of people in the pocket book who are just trying to buy a home.

There were a lot of hidden costs like this he emposed, in many areas...hunting licenses, licenses to work in a specialized field, drivers licenses, literally everywhere, many by executive order so you can't blame the legislature, that went way up. Tripled, Quadrupled. That's how he "balanced the budget without raising taxes" as he likes to claim.

If you really look at closely, the fees he imposed for things we all need add up to more for us Massachusetts residents than a small tax hike would have.

But that's Mitt the fraud for you.

as a MA resident and attorney that the State Constitution requires a balanced budget.

So, first, the pass provided to the legislature is disingenuous, they have to pass the budget no matter its component construction of which they have much involvement regardless of any executive order.  And, second, because of the State Constitutional mandate any claim by a governor that they "produced" a balanced budget is likewise a falsehood since they have no choice.

      "Massachusetts Miracle" anyone?

What this has to do with doing it thru fees, that effectively are taxes, and later claiming you didn't raise taxes, is beyond me. I just figured I'd post on point....a discussion of Mitt Romney and his merits, given the upcoming election and all. But thanks for your contribution.

        •  And Deval hasn't done the same? (0+ / 0-)

or any governor since 1980?  As stated up thread, this is what MA does regardless of the Admin with the consent of the Democratic controlled legislature.

I would think if you want to make a point about the Mittster, then make it about him and not an attribute that is easily dismissed since it is not solely applicable to his actions.

And thank you for the courtesy of a response.

The topic is Romney. But since you asked, my example of closing costs has not raised under Deval nor under any Governor other than Romney since I've been doing closings (18 years). They tripled under Romney. That's true of very many fees. Not true of other Governors. Unless you can point out some others that did, year and amount of raise and specific fee please.

Fact is, there aren't more than a handful of examples. The ad itself points out that under Romney, you can't even name them all in 30 seconds.

            That was the point.

  •  He used the concept in higher ed (5+ / 0-)

His bragging over the free tuition available in his state under the John and Abigail Adams Scholarships?

Ask Mitt Romney to name his signature education initiative as governor of Massachusetts and he'll likely answer that it was the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship Program. The scholarship, established in 2004, covers tuition at in-state public colleges and universities for students who score in the top 25 percent of their district on the state's 10th-grade math and English standardized tests.
    http://www.slate.com/...

Thing is, tuition is a tiny part of the overall cost. Romney managed to restructure the system to rely most heavily on fees. So, the average tuition at a state university is $965. Average fees are $6373. For U. Mass the average tuition is $1,616, fees are $9,447. Not what you expect when you hear an opportunity for free tuition, huh?

    governments need revenue
we shouldn't mind if Romney raised taxes

I wish the ad had Romney saying "I did not raise taxes in MA"
    then had this list.

that would show you can't trust him.

I just wish we could explode that whole thing about TAXES ARE BAD ...the add feeds into that idea...that Romney did something bad by raising taxes.
Taxes are part of how we pay for government including good government
witness FEMA working well today, supporting Governors so they feel they aren't standing alone.

I wish we could teach people that their taxes pay for things.
