VoteVets, the progressive veterans group founded by Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, has gone on the air with a $1.25 million ad campaign in three Senate races, Ohio, Nebraska and Virginia. Here's their ad for Sherrod Brown in Ohio.

In Ohio, the VoteVets ad seeks to describe Mandel's opponent, Sen. Sherrod Brown (D), as a strong leader on veterans issues. The ad describe Brown's work on veterans education and training initiatives, along with his votes in favor of tax cuts for veterans. The ad comes as Mandel, a Marine veteran who served in Iraq, has highlighted his military service in ads and during three debates with Brown. VoteVets indicated that it will spend $200,000 on the Brown ad.
Brown has a solid record on veterans issues, including trying to prevent having more of them by voting in opposition to the war in Iraq. Brown's support for veterans is one of the reasons they lined up to support him when Josh Mandel called him "un-American," even though Mandel is a veteran, a Marine who served in Iraq.

Goal Thermometer
He's an iffy choice for veterans, since he reliably toes the GOP line. He has so far refused to say whether he supports the Ryan budget, which would severely undercut the Veterans Administration and veterans health, job training and education programs. Mandel has been mum on these cuts, and coy about any specific spending cuts, though he says on his website that we must have "massive reductions in our spending that reduce the deficit by significant margins in the next few years."

Manel would likely be little more than a lackey for GOP leadership and for the interest groups that have kept him afloat in this campaign with the millions they've spent against Brown. No one, including veterans, needs another one of those guys in the Senate.

Please help keep Sherrod Brown in the Senate and get Ohio Democrats to the polls.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I just joined Vote Vets and made a contribution. I also sent a contribution the Obama campaign, Sherrod Brown and Elizabeth Warren. It wasn't much, a little more than I can really afford right now, but I'll make it up later. Every little bit helps. Five bucks here, ten bucks there, if enough people follow suit it soon adds up to big money. Donate what you can. Also, most important is GOTV.

I've done a little research on Mandel's military service and I come up with very little other than conflicting dates. Mandel joined the Marine Corps Reserve in 2000. He "retired" from the Corps in 2008. He also is reported to have served 2 tours in Iraq, in 2004 and again in 2007, yet he served 3 years as a Lyndhurst City Councilman from 2003 to 2006. In 2006 he was elected to the Ohio House and served until 2010. In 2010 he was elected as Ohio State Treasurer. Now, either he obtained leaves of absence from his  councilman and Representative duties, or he managed to be two places at once. He also spent 8 years as a Marine Reservist and left as a Sergeant (E-5) which from my military experience indicates a very mediocre performance.

Mandel is noted for having a "very casual relationship with the truth" and is not averse to dirty tricks and low road campaigning. He's a Tea Party darling backed by millions in out of state funding. If you've ever had a chance to see Mandel in person or observe his facial features and body language when questioned, you might get a disturbed feeling. He provides rote answers and if you try to follow up, he repeats his mantra verbatim until you just decide to move on.

Sherrod Brown has been a great Senator for Ohio and an asset to the nation. The fact that some psychologically challenged pathological liar like Mandel is within single digits of beating Brown is not only mind boggling, it's scary.

As a veteran who depends on VA services for my very life, the threat of someone like Mandel who supports the Romney/Ryan slash and burn budget is serious. I'd like to know more about Mandel's military service. I'd also like to hear more about his commitment to veteran's and the VA. Mandel is not good for Ohio or vets.

    •  Actually, Mandel did serve while in office (0+ / 0-)

going overseas after getting elected to Lyndhurst City Council and the state legislature, for a very specific reason we all know in Ohio. An honorable person would have served first and then run for office, especially one as young as Mandel. But that person would not have gotten large, glowing features in local publications, boasting about "city councilman serves in Iraq."

Going overseas AFTER being elected was a political move, typical of the ambitious hack Josh "The Empty Suit" Mandel is.

He is the worst candidate I have ever seen run statewide in Ohio, not just for veterans, but for women, for working people, for seniors, for students — you name it.

  •  Mandel would "likely" be a lackey (0+ / 0-)

for GOP leadership and special interest groups? No "likely" — you can COUNT on it. Mandel loves to use his own service in the Marine Reserves as a credential for office. Mandel may think cutting veterans services is no big deal, but not every veteran is married to a trust-fund heiress from one of Cleveland's most prominent families like Mandel is.
