I'm heartened to hear that finally there is some discussion of the Republican Congress's efforts to bring everyone together. Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan, Eric Cantor... yeah, they're all talking about how President Obama can't bridge the aisle, and they are the ones that will do a better job of bringing everyone together to build consensus.
Yeah, that's the same party that set out from the very first day of President Obama's inauguration to block progress on anything that might help President Obama get reelected. Even if it means keeping inflation artificially high. Even if it means watering down Financial Reform. Even if it means hostage-taking debt limit discussions that succeed in getting the United States credit rating lowered. Even if it means blocking a veterans jobs bill. Or insisting on offsets for unemployment insurance extensions. I could go on.
If you start hearing Romney and/or Republicans would be more bipartisan from voters, here's a response you can try out.... the Republicans are responsible for such profound obstruction that they should be known as the Won't Let You Do Nothing Congress.
The Senate Minority abused Senate debate rules (yes, DEBATE RULES) to prevent progress and prevent discussion on jobs bills among many other critical pieces of legislation and appointments (including for the new Consumer Financial Protection Agency). The House? They were too busy working to take away women's rights to health care and running for reelection to do their jobs.
This is just a quick diary, and I'm not going to enumerate all the myriad of ways that the GOP congress blocked progress. But perhaps we can use the comments as a way to collect them. So please, add a comment with your least favorite act of obstruction by the GOP over the last 4 years and how it impacted Americans. Perhaps we can build a good case to really make the Won't Let You Do Nothing Congress really stick in the final days of the campaign.
