In this excellent diary by fellow kossack, idbecrazyif, the point is made that there are pockets of those red states where voting dem is really, really important. Seriously, go read that diary, rec the diary, do what it says.
However, there is another really, super important reason to encourage your friends in non-swing state votes to vote: Run up the score in the popular vote!
Aside from an Obama loss, the next worse thing would be a split between the electoral college and the popular vote, with Obama winning the electoral college but losing the popular vote. (Nate Silver currently rates that as a 4.4% possibility).
We need Obama supporters nationwide to encourage friends, relatives, and anyone else they can talk to to vote on Tuesday for the President. So, even in deep, dark Alabama, and in redder than red Utah, and "rugged individualism" Idaho, we need dems to vote and to vote big. Also, as PatRiots comments below:
...I'm a vol. in Vermont, and part of out push now is to get everyone to vote even in what is pretty safe blue territory.
we need a clear victory here, if only to discourage future parties from just saying No to everything to force failure. if it is shown to work, in any way, we'll see a lot more of it.
also, statewide and local races are counting on you. they don't have huge ad budgets, they depend in part on the top ticket carrying them along. there's creepy PAC money attacking Vermont's Dem state treasurer and auditor candidates...ho hum, right? well, Vermont is moving to single payer, and the GOP is hoping to stop it in Vermont, so it can't be shown to work. get out to vote!
even if you have no similar minor races with national implications in your state, do it for the popular vote count. we need you!
So, while you're making those phone calls to swing states, please do this:
--Have some conversations in your home states.
--Remind folks why this election matters to them, and why the popular vote is also very important.
--Encourage your friends on FB and on twitter in those non-swing states to vote
Go Obama!
