Bloomberg was Forced to cancel the NYC Marathon to quiet critics and crybabies.
Accused of gross insensitivity, NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg yielded to critic's cries for more attention to their pain. Failing to comprehend the importance of keeping the most influential city in the world running no matter what, soft living lightweights, folded like a cheap beach chair as they screamed for help.
Politically wounded after bouts with the natives over banning transfats, super sized sugary sodas and a near prohibition on cigarettes in public spaces, the Mayor faced an insurrection from New Yorkers standing in gas lines, tweaking for dirty deep fried street dogs, a big gulp and a few smokes.
No one understands more than the Mayor what goes on behind the scenes to manage a declining metropolis the size of NYC. Unfortunately, the thousands of men and women it takes to keep train wheels on the tracks, barreling through dark, dank, rat infested tunnels, transporting millions to dead end jobs and crumbling careers can go unappreciated during difficult times.
In order for a tough town like New York to rock, the people have to be tough enough to roll with a punch every now and then. The Mayor's job is to show the world that New York may be the only place on earth, where rescue, recovery and rebuilding must occur at the same time after a major disaster.
With all the bravado and talk of the New Yorker's can do attitude, hard as nails resourcefulness and unmatched resilience, we've seen adolescent Haitian refugees handle far worse catastrophes than New York's hereinafter aka "Mr. & Mz. Softee". Turn up the heat for a few days and "hardcore" New Yorkers melted like a two dollar vanilla cone on a hot August afternoon.
Ironically, many of those soft in the head "Softees" will likely vote against the current administration's policies to address the climate conditions that caused them so much despair. Yearning for better, masses of Mr. and Mz. Softees fled the city (proper) to live life amongst those of like kind and quality. High School and Community College credentials in hand, they saved their union wages and Moved on Out!
Miscalculating or simply ignoring the risk, the blue collars grabbed their kids and marched toward affordable shores. While it could have been just the next rung of upwardly mobility, a cynic could argue the importance of ethnic camaraderie literally drove them to the very water's edge. Perhaps, some found separating themselves from "the others" was worth the threat.
Moving forward, many will be forced rethink the benefits of isolating themselves on an island to escape the irrepressible burgeoning of diversity in the city and beyond. On the other hand, the stubbornly stupid will happily rebuild the rubble.
