I have seen some of your sites, and I know that, for some of you, this is already dawning on you. One of you Free Republic folks called for the return of "Compassionate Conservativism" (though you were shot down for it.) Then there is Lindsay Graham's missive of the other day.
Still what he said is what most of you are saying. Erick Erickson says you did not lose because of social conservatism.
Wrong. Yes you did. And the other kind too.
Look at what happened last night. You lost the states you needed to win in because of the Auto Industry: nobody bought the "Jeep to China" thing, true, and that was a factor. But the fact is you all called for the death of the Auto industry and called its' salvation "Government Motors" with a smirk. That was remembered last night - one side believed in American manufacturing, and the other said, "Let the market decide." Guess who won?
Back to the social conservatism thing: how many states now have voter approved gay marriage? Heck, even weed managed a win last night. Then there is the Republican control of the Senate you fully expected to have - thanks to your Republican rape explosions, you kissed all that goodbye.
You have two paths before you: you can continue to appeal only to older white males. That is (and will probably continue to be) a solid demographic for you. However that won't be enough for more than regional victories.
Or you can join the rest of us in the 21st century, working on things that actually matter to people. Maybe your billionaires will figure this out and order you to make this change. I have my doubts.
You're afraid - the country is changing, maybe too fast for you. But too many of us do not share your fears. We are not threatened by someone else's marriage. Illegal aliens aren't stealing our jobs and bringing Iranians here from Mexico. Universal access to health care will not destroy the medical profession, and in the form of Obamacare, certainly is NOT socialism!
Rather than try to change our minds - which you won't - maybe it is time to change yours.
There will probably always be fiscal conservatism - at times, there may even be a need for someone to remind us that we have budget constraints to worry about. You can keep advocating for ludicrous social policies and be irrelevant. It makes our job easier if you do.
But for the good of society, maybe you shouldn't.
