Last night, the grumpy turtle, Mitch McConnell, released a statement that said, in part:
“The American people did two things: they gave President Obama a second chance to fix the problems that even he admits he failed to solve during his first four years in office, and they preserved Republican control of the House of Representatives,” he said in a statement.
But, is that really what happened?
Here is a chart from Huffington Post showing the current status of all the house races that were in play.
Not all of these results have been certified, but in all cases 99+ percent of the vote has been counted, so this is the likely outcome.
We lost one "Leans Dem" seat, AZ-2, but we also picked up five "Leans GOP" seats. As for the "Toss Ups," we picked up 10 out of 17. That around 59%.
The current makeup of the house is 193-242. After January, it will be 200-235. We gained seven seats.
So, yes, Republicans retained control of the house, but these gains, along with the gains in the senate and Obama's decisive victory show that the country is tracking left.
