Welcome to bookchat where you can talk about anything...books, plays, essays, and books on tape. You don’t have to be reading a book to come in, sit down, and chat with us
I figure that others besides me are totally exhausted so I am going to have an open thread night. We always talk about all kinds of books, plays and poems, anyway, but tonight anything that is on your mind is fine. Please share.
My comment is that on pages 425, 426 of The Pillars of Hercules, Theroux visits the ruins in Syria just north of Latakia, Ras Shamrah, where tablets were found with the earliest writing that became our alphabet. Suddenly the words on the page I was reading separated into syllables and individual letters and I was grateful for the fact that I can put them together and understand them. I can read and learn. I would like to say a brief thank you for a brain that works, for a culture that taught me to read, for a country that provided free books in libraries when I was a child, and for writers who have the courage and persistence to write books.
A huge THANK YOU to all who worked so hard for months to make the wins possible. I appreciate the hours and hours you all spent sending money, going door-to-door, phoning, writing letters, writing diaries and voting.
