In the wake of Barack Obama's reelection, the campaign shared an image of Barack and Michelle embracing at an event in Iowa. The image quickly became the most-shared item ever on Twitter.
The Economist, teasing its next cover, will be using that image in this way:
Forget for a moment
The Economist's perverse and distasteful choice, using the loving embrace of a couple for the purposes of an analogy that simply doesn't work.
The obvious problem here? The message that the onus is on President Obama to, in the spirit of bipartisan unity, embrace Republican obstructionism in order to address the myriad economic issues standing before us.
Sorry, The Economist. Obama's bipartisan efforts – his hugs – never yielded any fruit. So if you insist on using such a poor analogy, here's a better subtitle:
Republicans, now hug President Obama.
