Good morning my Brothers and Sisters. Despite what some people might think I actually don't go out of my way to be a contrarian asshole. The problem is that I'm just not very good at sitting here and taking what anyone says at face value. Whether they are on my "side" or not, I tend to take the things people say and put them through the mill that is my mind until they are broken down and I feel like I have come to some semblance of understanding.
Recently what I have been going over and over is something that made fairly big news in the days before the election. Lawrence Wilkerson on MSNBC said,
"(T)he real reason a considerable portion of my party (The GOP) wants President Obama out of the White House has nothing to do with the content of his character, nothing to do with his competence as commander in chief and president, and everything to do with the color of his skin."
When this statement hit the public everyone seemed to just fall all over themselves proclaiming how awesome and correct it was. And to be sure it's not an inaccurate assessment of the situation. But it tends to lose sight of a fundamental truth. Namely that it's ultimately meaningless.
The problem is that the Republican party has become so extremist on so many issues that I honestly believe it has become very difficult for our minds to fully accept the terrible terrible reality of the situation with which we are dealing.
If we had a party that believed in a bit less regulation than the Democrats, and a bit more spending on the military, and so on and so forth, then it would become very important to talk about the fact that some people on the "Right" are in opposition to President Obama simply because of the color of his skin. But that is not the case.
The Republican Party has become a party of extremism on every level, in every issue. A party of no taxes on the super rich, no regulations of any kind for business, no equality for LGBT people, people of color, or women. No social safety net. And keep in mind that I'm just hitting the highlights from their greatest hits.
At this point to support them and their agenda is ludicrous on a par with believing the Earth to be flat and the moon landing to be a hoax.
So in the final analysis does it really matter whether someone is supporting that agenda because they don't like the color of Obama's skin or not? Frankly I don't think it does. Wanting the wrong thing for the "right" reasons doesn't make it not the wrong thing.
Keep The Faith My Brothers And Sisters!
