a diary that I wrote yesterday was shared 3059 times, was tweeted 68 times, and shows 3800 shares on Facebook.

The diary never achieved recommended status. I'm guessing that sharing has little or no impact on recommended status.

Tip jar is 33, about 34 people recommended, and there are 12 comments.

Are requirements for recommended status published somewhere?

Is it limited to the one circumstance of how many click recommend, and is there a time limit on them doing so?

And finally, do recommends by different people carry different weight?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?

(The diary will be removed from the site and returned to your drafts for further editing.)
(The diary will be removed.)
Are you sure you want to save these changes to the published diary?

from markos to the most recently registered. but as i understand it, there is a diminishing return on recommends, over time. eventually- 2 days, now?- recommends no longer are possible.

only dk recommends matter, for making the rec list.

I normally keep an eye out for your diaries but didnt even see that one.  I've rec'd it now that you've brought attention to it.

There is some timing to it. I don't know what it is but as an example, it could be that 10 recs in 5 minutes puts it on the rec list.  But, say you get 10 recs, and 4 of them are in the first 5 minutes and it takes 15 more minutes to get the next 6. Still 10 recs, but No rec list.

I have no idea what the numbers and actual times are, and it could be wildly different from my example.

up on to the list. For example, if two diaries are posted about the same time, and one gets 5 comments/20 recommends and the other gets 18 comments/20 recommends. The one with the more comments will move up faster than than the first one.

And as somebody else also said, if a lot of diaries are flying by, and it moves down the Recent Diary list faster and others are going up that are getting more notice, comments and recommendations, it won't move up.

One thing I've done when I've invested a lot of time in a diary that I think people will recommend if they have a chance to see it, is to unpublish it. Then republish it, but only after it has fallen of the Recent Diaries list or I've made major additions to the diary. You posted that diary at 4:08 pm (EST). If you have republished it at 11:00 p.m., it might have gotten more attention.

  •  There is a formula, and (4+ / 0-)

the main input is the number of diary recs you get. The specifics of the formula are proprietary. The formula was developed by, and is owned, by the Kos Media corporation. Kos telling us the formula would be akin to Coke sharing it's formula, or McDonalds sharing it's Secret Sauce. Not gonna happen. But Facebook shares and tweets are not part of the formula (or are they?).

I know that Daily Kos once reported page views, a feature which disappeared about a month ago due to heavy usage during the debates.

I can see how there might be problems with relying on page views for measuring a page's popularity -- for example, it would be necessary to insure that they were distinct access events from different sources. Tracking from logged in users is also different from those who are not logged in.

I have also heard from one person that there are questions about the accuracy of the Facebook LIKE feature.

All of that said, i think it would be worthwhile for Daily Kos to once again publish page views. I understand it is on the agenda, and maybe now that the election is over with, it can be addressed.

  •  Community Spotlight? (0+ / 0-)

I think it is generally known that "diary pimping" in the comments of other diaries is frowned upon, and with good reason.

Is there a similar feeling about asking the Community Spotlight folks to take a look at a diary that the diarist thinks might get more attention? Or -- asked another way -- is there a forum where that routinely takes place? (I'm just wondering for future practice; i don't have any diaries that i'd put in that category right now.)

they peruse the site and pick diaries.  i think one can email them, but i'm pretty sure you know it's quite gauche to send them one's own diary.

as for the rest, nothing matters except how many recs a diary gets; it's all a numbers game.  which is why no one should be reccing a diary just because they "liked" it.  reccing a diary means it should be on the rec list.

your diaries routinely end up on the rec list; i'm a little confused by this diary.

I've been rec'ing diaries I like, figuring that if I like it and enough others like it then the 'Kos' Secret Sauce Formula' would put it on the rec list. And that makes sense to me because it's like saying, 'hey all, a bunch of us liked this, you might too'.
I'm having trouble seeing how I could think others should read a diary without liking something about that that diary enough to think others should read it.
I'm soo confused now, how the heck am I supposed to figure out if a diary SHOULD be on the rec list. That's more than I'm qualified for I'm afraid.
I feel like I'm misunderstanding something important here will you help me out? The DKos help feature is frustrating me more than I care for when I look there for this answer, so I'm turning to you.
        Thx in advance.

I don't think they would give any weight to someone adding their own personal comments.

It probably got lots of reads by non-kossacks who don't rec.
