Hello my fellow political brothers and sisters on the right. Its been a long, emotional election season. It was a tough 3 years before that, and in those three years the lines of communication between us have been all but severed. In fact, now-a-days the left and the right not only don't talk, we live in separate versions of the universe. We have bitterly called each other names, think of each other as the enemy, and generally don't agree on anything, objective reality included. From our side, we have endured the tea party, been called socialists, communist, Mao-Mao's (whatever that fucking means), we have been compared to Stalin, to Hitler, to Pol-Pot. We have had to endure Glenn Beck's end of the world Christianist rants, Limbaugh calling a woman a slut a number of times on the air, Fox News trying to take every misstep by the Obama administration and turn it into his "Iran Hostage Crisis" moment. And through it all, through all the lies and misconceptions that you have thrown out there, conservative brothers and sisters, we have overcome. We overcame the voter suppression, the insults, the long lines, the racist rants, the mainstream media Mittmentum hype, we turned out voters and we won. We won on the ground, with a message of hope and not hating the other guy. We won with Obamacare, we won with Lily Ledbetter, we won with ending the Iraq War; Obama ran on his successes as commander and chief, and he won, handily (only losing two of the states he won last time. He carried all but one swing state). You guys, on the other hand, ran on hate, on anger, on economic frustration. You ran on "America is bad with the socialist but we can make it better even though we fucked it up just 4 years ago". Thats why you lost.
But the election is over, and problems must be solved. The next four years of this country's history will need both sides, engaged in honest debate to solve the huge issues looming over our heads over the years to come. And now, you stand at the precipice of a great decision, conservatives. Do you continue to live in the intricately constructed bubble you find yourselves in now and oppose everything that Obama does because he is some sort of abortion loving, gun hating, european socialist? Because, we here on the left wont stop you, and in fact, we will overcome your obstructionism like we did last time, and continue to trounce you in elections. Believe me, me and my lefty, democratic friends are totally and completely cool with that. In fact, we rather enjoy 1) trouncing you electorally and 2) watching the blow up that follows the electoral shellacking.
Or, you could do something incredible. You could come back, rejoin reality. Its not too late brothers and sisters. You accept the fact that most of us are not socialists, you could accept that Stalin-style communism and democratic socialism are different in the first place. You could come back and sit down with us at the negotiation table. You could accept that negotiation doesn't mean getting whatever you want, it means a give and take, it means concessions. You could get some credit for moving Washington forward on some of the biggest issues today, and most likely, as a consequence, you would begin, again, to win elections.
And believe me, even though this goes directly against the interests of my party (and god only knows I would love for you to stay in your bubble, the republican party will be a regional party by 2016. Nothing but good news for us), I want you to rejoin reality. Not because it would help dems, but because it would help our country. See, this country depends on a debate that was supposed to be eternally waged by the political left and the political right. Our country is HEALTHY when this debate, centered around facts and reality, continues. This country is at its most successful with both sides can sit down together, look at the same facts and figures, and come to different conclusions. This country is not healthy when one side sits down at the table with the facts and figures and the other comes to the table with a print out of talking points from the Heritage Foundation and so much anger it borders on rabies. That is not how our country works.
So please, my conservative brothers and sisters, my fellow political observers, conservative politicians in Washington, conservative pundits and commentators, please rejoin reality. Not for the democrats, not for us liberals, but for the sake of your country. We need you right now. We can't argue with ourselves. This country was never so vibrant than when there were two robust ideologies competing to solve this country's largest problems. Us dems, liberals, and progressives are sick and tired of doing this alone. Please, rejoin us at the negotiation table.
Or continue to be mired in your own reality, and watch your party wither and die.
