Big Meet-Up This Friday
If you've been reading Navajo's New Day in the morning, you know that Kossack Events are springing up all over the country. We in Baja Arizona have one planned as well. We have a reservation at Casa Vicente for Friday night at 6 o'clock. Don't let the website put you off, I'm sure they offer a great Fine Dining experience, but we'll just do Tapas and Sangria. That should help keep the cost down. I told them it might be 5 people or it might be 15. They want me to call back Thursday with a better idea of the number, hence this diary. This could be a lot of fun, you won't want to miss it. Many have already RSVP'd by Kosmail, if you haven't, and want to come, please let me know in the comments.
First the News
According to the Arizona Secretary of State's Official Website, Ron Barber leads Martha McSally by 698 votes.
Flamenco Music
Casa Vincente is a Spanish joint, not Mexican; no chips and salsa, no rice and beans. There is a Flamenco school associated with the restaurant. Flamenco is Gypsy, or Gitano, music. Spain was under Arab rule for centuries. If you listen to the trills in Flamenco, you can hear the Call to Prayer. Those who stick around 'til 7:30 will get to see live music and dancing.
Malagueña
Flamenco music has several different forms. Fandangos, rumbas, bulérias, tarantas, and alegrías are among the more than 30 forms. One of these is the Malagueña, from the small city of Málaga on the Mediterranean coast. The most famous of these is the Malagueña de Lecuona, written for piano by a Cuban named Ernesto Lecuona. It is most often performed on guitar, and every guitarist has his or her favorite arrangement.
Flamenco Nuevo
Flamenco music was originally performed on guitar with rhythm from hand clapping and a caja, or box. Flamenco Nuevo players often add electric bass and drums. The Gypsy Kings are probably the best known in this genre. Here they are playing a tune from their Roots album which has a lot of pure old-time Gitano stuff. This one has more modern instrumentation.
OK, that's all I got for tonight.
Check-in in the comments and let me know if you're gonna' be there. Thanks.
