Former Maine Governor Angus King is pictured in this undated photograph released on June 22, 2012. It has been nearly a decade since King finished his second term as Maine's governor, loaded his family into a recreational vehicle and set off on a 5 1/2-month road trip across America, his presumed farewell to politics. Now, at 68, King not only is back in politics, he may become an unlikely power broker in the divided U.S. Senate after the November 6 elections.    REUTERS/Courtesy of the Office of Angus King/Handout (UNITED STATES - Tags: POLITICS ELECTIONS HEADSHOT) FOR EDITORIAL USE ONLY. Sen.-elect Angus King
Sen.-elect Angus King has made it official, announcing that he will caucus with Senate Democrats, brining the majority to 55 votes. This, as the Roll Call headline reads, is "No shocker."
Sen.-elect Angus King, I-Maine, surprised no one Wednesday morning when he announced that he would caucus with the Senate Democrats, bringing the number in that caucus to 55 for the new Congress.

“I wanted to maintain my independence as long and as thoroughly as possible,” King said. He added that “it simply wouldn’t be practical” to not join either caucus.

“Affiliating with the majority makes the most sense,” particularly with a clear Democratic majority, King said.

It's such a no-brainer that, according to King, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell didn't even bother to contact him to woo him over to the dark side.

But it did come as a surprise to someone, who apparently hasn't been keeping up too well lately.

He's probably already got his date with one of the Sunday shows to talk about how shocked he is.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
