Since Sunday is Sports Day in my house, I exercised my research muscles (if no other kind) and went through online disclosures of donations from the sporting world to New York-New Jersey metro area Hurricane Sandy relief. These are limited to cash-only or primarily cash donations and do not include proceeds from fundraising events or ticket sales. Of course, many individual area athletes have been pitching in with cleanup and relief efforts and are to be applauded for their generosity of time, labor and spirit.

Notably absent from the list: the National Hockey League, with three teams based right here in the metro area. The NHL is blaming their inability to donate right now on ongoing negotiations with the players’ union, although a statement from the league encouraged fans to "donate to the Red Cross disaster relief fund to help victims". Boooooooo! It's the penalty box for you, NHL. Many thanks, though, to the New York Rangers, New York Islanders, New Jersey Devils and minor league Bridgeport Sound Tigers hockey teams for organizing charitable events.

It is especially interesting and gratifying to see the Soccer Federations of Brazil and Colombia on the list of donors. It's nice to see some foreign aid coming our way for once.

Meanwhile, if they’re playing today, I’ll be rooting for these generous teams and individuals who are making recovery a little easier for my neighbors in New York and New Jersey:

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

as a jerk in the media. I have listened to him speak and now this, he seems like a really cool stand-up guy.

I have newfound respect for him. He didn't get any publicity from this and he has no local teams or interest.

In response to Donald Trump offering President Obama $5 million to a charity of Obama's choosing if he released passport applications and college transcripts to the public, Cuban offered Trump one million dollars to a charity of Trump's choosing if Trump shaved his head.

There is no record so far, by the way, of Trump contributing to Sandy relief in his native New York.
