At halftime of tonight's Sunday Night Football game, Bob Costas offered a brief commentary on yesterday's tragic murder-suicide involving Kansas City Chief Jovan Belcher.
Costas quoted/paraphrased a column by Jason Whitlock:
Our current gun culture simply ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy, and that more convenience-store confrontations over loud music coming from a car will leave more teenage boys bloodied and dead....
What I believe is, if (Belcher) didn’t possess/own a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today....
Handguns do not enhance our safety. They exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments, and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it.
Whitlock said it first and well, but Costas bringing that message to this national football audience has significance and took courage. He is already being attacked by
Freepers and others on the right. The gun industry will be coming at him.
Let's stand with Bob Costas for calling out the obvious truths one should reflect on after these tragedies and for doing so to a football audience that won't universally agree with him or even agree with his right to say it.
For me, I thank Costas for paying a price to advance a message that needed to be heard.
