Charleston, SC- Join us, Sunday, December 9 at the Intersection of King and Calhoun Streets in Downtown Charleston, SC starting at 2 pm, to put Walmart on the naughty list . We will carol our way through the Second Sunday on King Festival in a consciousness raising salute to local business and a challenge to the values of Walmart. We’ll sing special “Xmess Carols” praising local business and American products while distributing literature about how much big box bargains are costing the American middle class.
Participants from local human rights organizations of all types will participate in festive, holiday apparel. We’ll pause as we move South down King Street to shop and enjoy the festival. Our Uncle Sam-ta will hand out “nice list” recognitions to stores offering local and American made goods which we’ll share online. You can follow preparations and sign up to participate online at http://tinyurl.com/... or call us the day of the event on our cell phone at (843) 870-5299. The event will last about an hour.
Walmart helped offshore over 133,000 U.S. manufacturing jobs between 2001 and 2006 to China. The nation’s largest retailer now pays workers so poorly that over two billion dollars is spent each year providing Walmart employees with Medicaid and Food Stamps. Meanwhile Walmart receives huge and largely hidden subsidies through special tax districts and infrastructure expenditures from Government to enable it to undersell established competing businesses. Where Walmart appears, wages and benefits fall. It destroys two jobs for each one it “creates.”
Each Christmas low prices enabled by low wages here and slave wages overseas lure Americans to abandon US products and local businesses. With each annual cycle, America loses more of its middle class, its manufacturing strength and the local character of our community businesses. Walmart is slowly transforming the American economy into something increasingly like China’s, leading a race to the bottom for the entire retail industry. Its time to tear down that Walmart and put them on the naughty list.
