NYC Kossacks banner

Greetings, fellow Kossacks! I'm drafted to show you pictures of the delightful meetup enjoyed by New York City (and vicinity!) Kossacks this past Sunday, at Spitzer's Corner, home of the Really Good Fries, down on the lower east side of Manhattan.

I certainly did none of the work! The restaurant made the drinks and the food, and delivered them to the table. sidnora did all the work of organizing the event and inviting us. And ask took all these brilliant photographs (except, presumably, the one of him).

Join me below the Kossack Croissant to see more!

Some of us had been agitating since August to return to Spitzer's Corner for a meetup. It was very noisy last time we were there, but the fries! After trying a perfectly nice place in midtown, we at last returned to Rivington Street. They reserved the big table in the back room for us again, but this time, there was no extremely loud birthday party at one end of the room. Yay!

We reached capacity at the big table a few different times, as people came and went and moved around, but we never ran out of room. The food and drinks were good, the service was attentive, and (I cannot stress this enough), in person, everyone is nice! So very many of us say to each other, I'm really very shy! I was so afraid to go to a meetup the first time! I know a lot of you other very shy people are out there, not coming to New York meetups or ones in other locations, or to Netroots Nation for that matter, because you see that people on the internet get into fights and you are afraid you'll meet nasty fight-y people. I hear you! Me too! But the fact is, people who meet in person mostly don't act like people on the internet, otherwise there would be a riot at the supermarket every day. Go on -- give it a try next time. You know you want to! And everyone else wants you to! It's fun! You make friends with additional liberals! How can that be bad?

ask took lovely portraits of most everyone, except for rubyr, who is a supernatural phenomenon and cannot be photographed. Oh!!! And, as noted in the comments, we also missed devtob's wife LuLu, who had to leave quite early to catch a matinee of Warhorse, where (this is awesome) her son is Technical Director! Next time, we will catch her.

Our previous time at this restaurant, we welcomed gchaucer2 from Connecticut, but her pal Phil S 33 was not able to come along. This time, it was gchaucer2 who couldn't make it, and Phil that we were delighted to see. If I understand correctly, we can thank thankgodforairamerica for driving from Connecticut with these additional CT Kossacks as passengers.
brooklynliberal, seen here enjoying the world-famous fries, is a graphic artist. She showed us some of the gorgeous holiday cards she hand-makes on a letterpress. I will tell you where her Etsy shop is if you promise not to snap up all of her cards before I get my act together to buy some.

So, this guy keeps attending the meetups, claiming to be one or the other of a pair of identical twins, but, tellingly, they never show up at the same time. Kossacks may draw their own conclusions. ;)

If you have enough to eat, please consider those who don't. The greater New York area still has people who were left homeless by the storm, for example. There are a number of charities helping them; here are two that are providing food:

New York: City Harvest

New Jersey: Community Foodbank of New Jersey

Thanks!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
