Was on LinkedIn again this morning (there a lot) a found a fascinating article by a person there called "A Movement towards Food Justice". The person issuing the challenge is Cory Booker, the Mayor of Newark.

I had not heard of the SNAPChallenge before - it is also being twittered at #SNAPChallenge. I just saw the prior diary by Laura Clauson here. Cory's idea is to live on a SNAP (Supplmntal Nutrition Assistance Program) in New Jersey for a week to, in his words:

raise awareness and understanding of food insecurity; reduce the stigma of SNAP participation; elevate innovative local and national food justice initiatives and food policy; and, amplify compassion for individuals and communities in need of assistance.
More below

I know Cory had some hits during the campaign from the right wing. I recognize Laura's issues with politicization but I do think think social media can help stress the argument.

I just think this is something everyone should follow and support. Follow him on Twitter.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

can't get past Booker's comments that Pres Obama's attacks on Bain capital are "nauseating" and as in appropriate attacks on Jeremiah Wright.

While those comments were justifiably pilloried (and ignored by Obama), overall Booker seems to be a great mayor for Newark, and quite likely future senator from NJ.

I met Cory in college. Amazing guy. I agree his comments about Bain were not his finest moment, but a man is made of more then one morning news show appearance.

The comments Booker made were extraordinarily poorly timed. Offering cover to the Republican pres candidate The months up to a close presidential election reflects unbelievably poor character, cowardice - possibly greed.

All large investors do not deserve to be attacked (see Buffet, Warren). But Bain Capital's success embodied the problem of today - reward for pirates, not for true entrepreneurs.

Mayor Booker showed his hand  - He is in thrall to wall street.  We do not need more corporatists in federal positions.

Not the vibe I get from him at all. And I said so at the time this firestorm first erupted. I think he is very human and deserves kudos for the effort he's making to show people that the "welfare queen" bunkum Reagan sold us a generation ago is exactly that: malarkey.
