I have a lantana bush out behind my garage that has become huge thanks to the grey water from our washer. The blooms have been gorgeous and I didn't think it could get any prettier. Then my wife started calling for me while she watered hanging baskets in the back yard. The lantana was swarming with butterflies.
There was a cold front that came through earlier in the week and most likely brought the butterflies in with it. Lantanas have a very aromatic smell and their flowers are actually clusters of very small flowers (called umbels and florets by flower geeks.) This means the butterfly stays on the cluster for while taking nectar from each floret. Near stationary small subect: get the camera and switch to macro mode. I was able to identify several of the species but I might be wrong.
I usually associate butterflies with the summers of my youth. Not anymore.
