Where do we stand?

The current round of gun violence is just a road too far. The progressive community needs to adopt a program of first identifying all guns and equipment with no valid hunting or defense purpose such as assault weapons, high capacity magazines, .50 cal rifles, etc.; second , requiring that these weapons be turned in for appropriate compensation and then destroyed. Furthermore, manufacture or importation of such weapons or equipment would be banned. Third, we need to require registration, training and securing.

Politically we need to not support any politician who does not endorse some measure of reasonable gun  control. No current democratic candidates stand up for gun restrictions for  fear of NRA. They are a paper tiger in any districts where a progressive candidate has a prayer of winning. If the constituents are “gun nuts” then they are probably also fervent right to life, 6000 year old earth types and we will never win anyway.

The final step is to blame the politicians when the violence happens. How many congressmen want to have their town halls and facebook pages covered with people calling them “baby killers?”

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

That will play directly into the hands of the NRA and likely unconstitutional.

    •  It's time to amend the 2nd. It is (0+ / 0-)

An awful Amendment, and poorly worded. We are being ruled here by a bunch of men dead for 200 years. We don't know what their "intent" was regarding modern weapons when all they knew of "arms" were slow-loading, short-range, inaccurate muskets.

But even more important than their intent is the fact that they were sometimes just flat out wrong (such as their view that blacks were subhuman or women unfit to participate in government in any way).

  •  No compensation. (0+ / 0-)

Not for gun nuts. Compensation to those who died.

  •  Those buyback programs never seem to work. (0+ / 0-)

The gun makers pump em out and sell them to gang bangers as fast as the authorities can buy them.

What the progressive community needs is :
    1. to stop pontificating
    2. To start trying to understand where the resistance for gun control comes from
    3. Find a way to adress the legitimate concerns among those

That is, if the progressive community wants to have any influence in this debate. If not, please proceed, governor.

Millions die, because the State has no gun control on itself.

The US government has bought billions of rounds of ammunition for various agencies with no stated purpose.
