Here is your legacy.  Very rarely do politicians have the opportunity you have right now.  Call together lawyers and gun control advocates to the White House.  Craft as restricting a gun control bill as possible that will not get automatically thrown out of court - definitely re-instating the assault weapons ban and making it a federal crime to carry a concealed weapon.  Wait until the new Congress is in session.  As soon as they establish their rules of order and hopefully create a talking fillibuster, have a senator introduce the bill as first order of business.  Out of habit the Republicans will fillibuster it but after a half day of protecting assault weapons on C-Span they will give up (this is what the talking fillibuster is for Kevin Drum).  Have the Senate push the gun bill through as quickly as possible and send it over to the House.  The Republicans in the House will try and quash it.  Take it to the people immediately.  Make it your priority even more than the economy (dead children are a more immediate problem than tax cuts - I'm sorry).

Do not listen to any of your advisers!!!  Do not listen to the media!!!  Don't listen to anybody but your heart and what you feel when you look at your children. The people are with you in a way that is very rare.  Strike quickly and be decisive.  Do not compromise (maybe the next massacre will only have five dead children instead of twenty).  There are three seconds on the clock and the ball is in your hands.  Take it to the House Mr. President!!!!! (Of course in multiple ways).

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Nor a dictator. Nor an object.  He's the president and just a person.  This country is still madly, head-over-heels in love with its guns. Its rifles, its handguns, its super-cool, rapid-fire death machines. Protectors of the universe, all.

I hate 'em all and hope we can have some serious gun control, but to suggest the president can just make it happen from some mythical "bully pulpit" isn't realistic.

I do hope we see some serious leadership.

POTUS can demand action from the Congress and influence public opinion (Exhibit - A: Same Sex Marriage!). There is a national interospection on what we need to avoid such tragedies. POTUS Obama HAS TO DELIVER his own words. I am not asking for gun ban in US. I am asking that large capacity ammunitions, semi-automatic be banned, registration process setup for all gun-owners and a national database that tracks all legit guns. This isn't asking for much.

a legacy for himself. That's already been done.

The man is a class act and many may disagree with the speed and passion on which he moves, but his consistency is beyond the pale. One thing he doesn't do is waste time and energy on things he knows is a fools errand. I know here at DKOS the prevailing wisdom is to bang one's head on brick walls till they crumble. More power to them, but this is something he will have to evaluate when all the dust settles. This time, I think he will see a way to beat the monster under the bed once and for all.

Lets see what he comes up with, because if he does see a chance, you can bet he will have a better plan than you or I would ever come up with.

bs. I haven't read anything lately that has come close to this comment, it's not even comprehensible double speak. You said nothing, nothing at all. Just gibberish.

What monster under the bed, the violent one that says 'Terrorist's are gonna kill yer family' and we got to kill them and any one how might me a terrorist, as if they were bugs? Or maybe the monster that says guns don't kill just lunatics armed with guns and the law to run around waving guns in every bodies face, and oh yah some armed to the teeth creep just killed 28? people.

Beat your own head in. This is not a brick wall it is a human construct built of fear, violence, ignorance and ass backwards anything decent that is human..

  •  I just don't see Obama (0+ / 0-)

expending the political capital to get this done. So I suppose we will just pray for the dead and go home and hug our children.

  •  Best way to do so... (0+ / 0-) to take advantage of existing statutes, and re-categorize handguns and semi-automatic firearms under the Title II weapons designation.

    From Wikipedia:

Title II of the Gun Control Act of 1968 is a revision of the National Firearms Act of 1934, and pertains to machine guns, short or "sawed-off" shotguns and rifles, and so-called "destructive devices" (including grenades, mortars, rocket launchers, large projectiles, and other heavy ordnance). Acquisition of these weapons is subject to prior approval of the Attorney General, and federal registration is required for possession. Generally, a $200 tax is imposed upon each transfer or making of any Title II weapon.
Considering the death, destruction and damage these weapons produce, putting under a more-restrictive category is entirely appropriate.
