How many times do we have to hear this defense of gun ownership?

This is bullshit

Guns do kill. Guns kill daily. People may pull the trigger, but the gun does the killing. How can anyone think otherwise? What sort of disconnect happens within the minds of folks spouting this crap?

And to the gun-hoarding, Constitution-loving, Red, White and Blue American shouting “Second Amendment” every minute of every day? Well, fine. You can have as many muskets and black powder pistols as you want. Use the weapon of choice available when your favorite fucking document was crafted.

But no more automatic weapons. No more assault weapons. No weapons capable of holding more than a single round. Black powder, musket ball, wadding. That’s all you get. Nothing else.

Your Second Amendment rights don't trump the rights, or lives, of twenty young children. No matter how you try to spin it.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

When I saw your header, I thought "I have to say something!" but then found that you think as I do!  I was going to say that when guns are easy to access, in our violence-driven culture with videos and games, etc., they can easily be used for ill.

Because the phrase before the comma was, well, written before the part about the "right to bear arms".

    A well regulated militia.

Hmmm... what's the modern day equivalent of a well regulated militia?

You want to own a gun? You have that right. Join the fucking U.S. Armed Forces.

You will learn how to safely handle a firearm.
You will learn how to safely store a firearm.
You will learn how to safely transport a firearm.

Then, when you have been properly "regulated", most hitches last for 4 years, you may submit to the background check and buy yourself a gun.

If you hear someone being mugged, raped, beaten, or otherwise being wronged on or about your property, you may militarize or militia-ize yourself and take careful action as your training demands.

When or if the country is attacked, you are compelled to take up your firearm and protect the nation against all enemies, foreign or domestic.

Those are the conditions of gun ownership in Patriot4Peace Land.

  •  It's a pedantic technically correct obfuscation (0+ / 0-)

    around the real issue.

The fact is guns don't kill people. They can't, because they are inanimate objects.

The idea is to hope that the person on the receiving end of this garbage argument is: a) too flabbergasted at the sheer stupidity it takes to advance that argument to be able to mount a coherent defense; b) is distracted into a semantics game or tangent issue about how other inanimate objects can be used--by people--to harm other people.

"Guns kill people" is shorthand for "people can die from injuries caused by the impact from projectiles emitted from firearms." And gun-nuts know this. They are just of two camps: 1) those not bright enough to understand it; 2) those irrational, insane, or too-clever-by-half enough to not care, and think they are scoring a rhetorical win by deliberately ignoring how human beings use language and choosing to interpret the words "guns kill people" literally.
