Well, today could be the last day Earth will exist as we know it...could be, could be. I personally believe we will wake up Saturday morning to witness some folks freaking out about last chance holiday shopping while others will be waiting to watch Monday Saturday Night Football (since the last Monday night game of this football season has been switched to Saturday night this year because Monday is Christmas Eve).
Actually, to be precise, I should say I believe when we wake up in California (most of us at least) on Friday morning, December 21, 2012 we will know the world didn't end because the exact time the so called "end of the Mayan calendar" will happen is 11:11 Universal Time (UT), which will be 3:11 AM on December 21st Pacific Standard Time (PST).
Truthfully, the real reason I'm pretty certain the Earth won't end in the wee hours of the morning on December 21st is those that are saying so...GOT IT ALL WRONG anyway. And here's why:
The Mayan "Long Calendar" started on August 11, 3114 BC. There are 20 shorter cycles within the Mayan Long Calendar. Each of the 20 shorter cycles is called a b'ak'tun. At 11:11 UT on December 21st, the Long Calendar will be 13.0.0.0.0, indicating the end of the 13th b'ak'tun and beginning of the 14th b'ak'tun of the entire 20 b'ak'tun cycles of the Long Mayan Calendar. Twenty b'ak'tun cycles are known as one piktun (Long Cycle or Long Calendar).
So, in Mayan reality, December 21st is just the end of one b'ak'tun and beginning of the next b'ak'tun. Each b'ak'tun is 144000 days in length.
The date on which the Mayan calendar will begin the next piktun (after completing the current series of 20 b'ak'tuns of this piktun)...having the Long Calendar designation of 1.0.0.0.0.0...will be on October 13, 4772. So then will that be the actual end of the world? Nope, just the end of the current piktun and the beginning of the next.
Each piktun is really a "universal rebirth" according to Mayans. A piktun cycle is 2,880,000 days long = 7885 solar years. The Maya believed that "the universe is destroyed and then recreated" at the start of each "universal cycle" (piktun or Long Cycle).
Well that means universal destruction and universal recreation must then happen simultaneously! This therefore can't be literal universal destruction, but rather metaphorical universal destruction. Perhaps a better way to look at it is "universal deconstruction and universal reconstruction" as in "a shift of consciousness."
BUT WAIT there's more!!!
7,200 days = 1 K'atun = 20 solar years.
144,000 days = 20 K'atun = 1 B'ak'tun = 394 solar years.
2,880,000 days = 20 B'ak'tun = 1 Piktun = 7885 solar years.
57,600,000 days = 20 Piktun = 1 Kalabtun = 157,704 solar years.
1,152,000,000 days = 20 Kalabtun = 1 K'inchiltun = 3,154,071 solar years.
23,040,000,000 days = 20 K'inchiltun = 1 Alautun = 63,081,429 solar years.
So, pick your "end of the Earth date" anytime you want...your choice. And you can always chose to pick a date the Earth will end that is in sync with any of the endings of the plethora of Mayan calendar cycles.
To celebrate the end of 13th b'ak'tun and the beginning of 14th b'ak'tun of the current piktun, I'm celebrating the winter solstice of 2012...and will wait for Saturday Night Football.
Some folks are sure a giant asteroid will destroy the Earth on December 21st this year due to having its orbit deflected so it will smash into Earth by a planet that is supposed to be the size of the Earth making it's customary visit into our solar system. This planet is called Nibiru, the Red Star or Planet X. Some even believe Nibiru itself will smash into Earth. Nibiru is supposed to make a cycle every 3600 years. The first time this was claimed was in 1995 by Nancy Lieder, founder of the website ZetaTalk. Lieder describes herself as a contactee with the ability to receive messages from extra-terrestrials from the Zeta Reticuli star system through an implant in her brain. Hummm, I wonder why the earth wasn't destroyed 3600 years ago, or 3600 years before that...or 3600 years before that?
I personally believe this won't happen.
The main reason I don't believe the Earth will end tomorrow is because the makers of Oreo cookies have assured us all we need not worry about it.
So what are you going to do tomorrow on the last day of 13th b'ak'tun within the current piktun cycle of the Mayan calendar?
