I just listened to Wayne LaPierre's idea for keeping our school's safe, and in a nutshell, he wants to put armed guards in schools. In Wayne's world, there's too much gun violence in schools, so we should put someone with a gun in the school.
That approach only addresses a symptom of the disease - trying to stop a madman once he's inside the school from shooting people - but it does nothing to cure the disease itself - that there are people so deranged they seek out innocent men, women and children to slaughter with the aid of machines designed specifically for that purpose.
He seems to think we should spend more money on schools - not on more teachers - but on armed guards.
Think about all the kids in troubled families who have little to no positive adult influence at home. Where is the most likely place for them to then find it? School. How many stories have you heard about teachers who made a difference, who took the time to show a kid they mattered to someone, who may have provided just enough of a positive influence to give that child some hope for the future. How many armed guards have made a positive difference in a kid's life?
If we start diverting resouces from teaching to protecting, giving teachers even less opportunity to connect with their students, and less financial incentive for the good ones to stay - then I suspect the need for armed guards in Wayne's world will only increase.
There is no single cure to this disease we're all suffering through, it will take a number of approaches, but arming the schools isn't one of them.
