Slate pegs the gun deaths since the Newtown shootings at 112.
That information is surprisingly hard to come by. The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, for example, has a tally atop its website of “people shot in America.” That number, though, is an estimate, based on the number of gun injuries and deaths recorded by the CDC in 2008 and 2009, the most recent years for which statistics are available. It seems shocking that when guns are in the headlines every day, there’s no one attempting to create a real-time chronicle of the deaths attributable to guns in the United States.
It is time to break the strangle hold that the NRA has over gun death information.
Gun Violence: How Research on an American Health Crisis Has Been Suppressed
Congress cut the CDC’s budget by $2.6 million—the amount thought to be spent on the offending publication—and passed language declaring: “None of the funds made available for injury prevention and control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may be used to advocate or promote gun control.”
With that act, the nation’s leading public health agency was effectively barred from making recommendations on a public health problem that constitutes one of the leading causes of death of Americans. The law remains in effect, and it’s had a chilling effect on research, says David Hemenway, professor of health policy at the Harvard School of Public Health and director of the Harvard Injury Control Research Center.
“Compared to the size of the problem, there has been far too little research on gun violence,” Hemenway said in an email. “Part of the reason is the pressure the gun lobby has put on funders. The Centers for Disease Control, for example, is almost afraid to say the word ‘guns.’”
It is time for full real time disclosure.
Who is getting shot, where, why, when and how.... and with what.
Information is power and the NRA's control of gun death data needs to end.
