Welcome to the first Sunday Puzzle Warm-Up of 2013!

Sunday Puzzle Warm-Up is a light and casual Saturday night puzzle party to have some fun and to get the brains in gear for Sunday night (when the regular Sunday Puzzle, with more difficult puzzles, goes up).

This weekend is not only the first weekend of the year, it's also the first weekend of the month. Which means this Sunday will be time for the monthly potluck puzzle party. OldPhart has contributed a holiday greeting puzzle, I've contributed some One-Offs, pucklady will be providing the JulieCrostic, and there'll probably be plenty more.  So if you like puzzles and have any you'd like to share, mark your calendar for tomorrow night, January 6, 2012 at 8:30 EST / 5:30 PST and come to the party.

But that's tomorrow night. For tonight, there's a new 21-clue JulieCrostic you can use to warm-up on.  Plus, for those who find the JulieCrostic too easy and would like an additional challenge to tide you over until tomorrow night, there's a new Crypto-Gremlin waiting for you as well.

Puzzle fun awaits! Come on down and join in...

First, here's your new Crypto-Gremlin:

How to solve JulieCrostics

For those of you unfamiliar with this kind of puzzle, what you do is solve the clues and write the answers in rows. In tonight's puzzle there are 7 rows with 3 answers per row.

Each word in a row contains all the letters of the previous word, plus one new letter. Write the added letters in the space between the word which doesn't have it and the word which does. The vertical columns created by the added letters will spell out a word or phrase.

An example of how this looks is provided below.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
