This is the first of a possibly ongoing series of diaries in which I shall showcase (if that's the word for unwarranted showing off of not-terribly good skills) some of my compositions, throwing the door wide open to discussions of one's own favorite music. Feel free to add your own compositions, or favorites of yours, in the comments.

So, this is my very first ever composition, completed way back in, oh, May of 2012. Eons ago, really. Simple enough; Piano Quintet (Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello, Contrabass), minimal production...

I'm not sure exactly where it came from, or where I discovered I was able to actually do this (however poorly); to be honest, despite being able to play a few instruments in an okay-ish (as in, "don't stand too close, and I warn you I'm not 100% resposible for what comes out of this thing" kind of way) I never thought I had any talent when it came to actually composing anything, even as simple a piece as I present here.

Really, all I wanted to do was grab a few pieces of sheet music from composers I love (a list too long to start here!) and see if I could create my own orchestral versions in what software I had (FLStudio- I recommend it!). Naturally, I played with it a bit more, and then something happened: Music started to come out!

I've composed about 20 pieces so far, some more ambitious than others; they just seem to happen, somehow. I've not exactly been in a position to talk to many other composers, but those I have spoken to seem to say about the same thing - "we're not sure where it comes from, and we don't plan it, as such; it just appears".

So, there we have it. My first shared piece of music, my little "How it was born" story. I'll see if anyone is interested in sharing their own stories, be it art, music or movies, share links and generally just talk about creativity and what it means to them. And if anyone is inspired to play with music themselves, go ahead and post it! I'd love to know what others like.

So with this, I kick open the floor to general cheers, jeers, fruit and vegetables and anything else that occurs to anyone else!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
