David Bowie famously lamented in 1969, as Major Tom in his seminal hit "Space Oddity":
here am I sitting in a tin can
Far above the world
Planet Earth is blue
and there's nothing I can do
On a day with such
dire,
horrible, and downright
frightening news about our current, and impending climate/biosphere situation, it's something of a relief and welcome ray of hope (for me at least) that today, on his 66th birthday, Bowie has released a new song and video:
"Where Are We Now?".
The music is (of course) beautiful, the imagery (in the video) somewhat haunting, and the lyrics intriguing. The setting is Berlin, where Bowie lived for a time in the mid 70's. And although they seem, as ever, to be just another love song, I can't help but notice how it ends with the simplest references to being alive, and specifically enjoying the basic joys of nature that planet earth brings us every day:
... as long as there's SUN
as long as there's SUN
as long as there's RAIN
as long as there's RAIN
as long as there's FIRE
as long as there's FIRE
as long as there's ME
as long as there's YOU.
I have to say, on a day with such depressing news, this was a good way to end it. I am ever hopeful there will be a better tomorrow!
Enjoy (and take heart!):
