I planned a meetup for Feb 9th.  What is now concerning me is the peak of Flu season is that week and the next.  Boston has already been put under a state of emergency and Florida's warm temps..20 degrees above normal and our meetup.

Did I pick the wrong date?  Seriously, the 41 states that is widespread flu is hitting hard and I would hate for our first meetup to be cancelled due to flu or we expose one another.   Should we wait until March after this pandemic or epidemic gets over the peak.  I need input.  I am a bit uncomfortable and normally not into fearmongering but what a bummer to have the flu anytime, what if so many of the RSVP's have to either caregive or come down with the junk.

Speak to me... What do you think.

The west coast has not been affected but I was told by the Water dept this morning there are no beds in the county.   That tells me the flu is here and pretty dangerous.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.

But then with my lungs it doesn't take the flu to knock me over. The most I can do is plan to go and apologize if my lungs decide to shut down. Hopefully they'll be ok. Every long term plan I make at this point comes with the caveat "given I can breathe and am not in the hospital."

There is no way we can be 100% safe.  I would just urge those who may be sick to stay away.

  •  Although I've had the flu shot, there is (0+ / 0-)

still a chance to get a weakened version of it and as the article Dr.Terwilliker linked to there are other nasty things floating around out there.

Will there be available dates in March at that same park?  If not are there any restaurants nearby that would have a separated space that could be used (perhaps saving the fee the park wants)?  (Here are 25 I found on teh google)

As I wrote you yesterday, I likely will not be able to commit to the 9th after all, but there is still a possibility I could make it after all.

It may be nice to have a bit more time to plan and get the word out to attract more Florida Kossacks.

i was not that concerned until the water dept was abuzz when I went in to pay my bill about the nursing home, the hospitals and all being filled to the max and the peak didn't hit till Mid Feb.
I have been getting breaking news on my puter from Tampa all morning and it has concerned me.

We can get the same building in March.  I had no idea that 18 kids had died and 2200 were in intensive care over this stuff.
call me flaky but if I get the flu, I can't do anything including showing up... I don't like to live in fear but we have several things going on here.. 20 degrees warmer and that bug will not get killed off by cold .. We definately need a freeze of some sort I would think.  Moist, warm, and highly contagious.  I have kids, others hav kids and most of us are not stay at home bubble folks.  We are in and out everywhere.  I am allergic to the vaccination.
Jack refuses to take it and here we are ........

Rethinking date.   Having to because I don't want a meetup that flops into sickness.

        Not.Worth.It!!

The whole concept is to meet each other and have a good time - something we can all look forward to.  If you are stressed about it then it defeats the purpose.

You are right to get input, but as the person doing all the work and carrying all the responsibility I think you have the right to make this kind of call if that's what you want.

Never had another shot.  Might have had a few flus since then - nothing bad though that I can recall.  Maybe no flu at all.   I'm 61 now and doing just fine.

is incubated in, but there is a new version that is inhaled which is not grown in eggs.  There may be age limits on the new one, so you would have to call your doctor or clinic to confirm if they carry it and if you are age eligible.

Getting my flu shot tomorrow (that's no guarantee I WON'T get  the flu, but it does make it less likely).

While it's true there are a lot of cases popping up this year, realistically more people still won't get the flu than will get it. I agree with gulfgal - no way to be 100% safe - and Horace - don't go if you get the flu - but otherwise, I don't think its likely the flu outbreak will be a significant problem.

...let me add that if it's really worrying you, putting the event off until March might be best. My schedule will certainly be much more flexible in March, though I'll be taking a family vacation March 19-29, so won't be available then.

I haven't requested Feb. 9 off yet, so I'm not committed to any particular date.

  •  Avoid Flu Shots Like The Plague Itself.... (1+ / 0-)

About 15 years ago as RN's the hospital I worked at in Vancouver, Washington insisted we take flu shots.  Within 4 hours, 7 nurses could barely move their injected arm.  One started hallucinating & had to go to the ER where her parents came in to calm her down.

By the end of the 8 hr shift, we were extremely ill.  I stayed flat on my back for a solid week once I got home.  Everything hurt, even my hair.  It is the sickest I have ever been in my entire 67 years.

Never, ever again.  This current flu shot may not even cover the current strain.

Avoid them.  I've gotten a mild flu once in 15 years without the shot.  The thought is that the mercury in the shot affects brain cells & may be a contributing factor to Alzheimers & dementia decades later.
