I haven't posted a diary for awhile  ( taking time off after the election I guess)....but I feel that I have to post something today about the dreary reaction of some of my co-workers to Obama's announcement today on gun's disappointing to say the least...more after the fold.....

I work with some people who are just in love with guns!  It's a new experience for me becasue I have never been in such close proximity to real gun lovers before.  We've had our arguments and discussions before.. They have been amicable enough, no frothing at the mouth like that one dude on you tube.  Aside from our disagreements on guns, they are very nice guys and I like them on a personal basis.

BUT  they are just dead set against any regulations concerning their guns, and I can't make them see a cause and effect relationship between guns in the home and violent gun deaths in which we lead by far any other so-called advanced nations..  Personally I just can't see why anyone would want to have a gun, unless you are an avid hunter.  Guns are designed for one purpose only......TO KILL OTHER PEOPLE

But these guys talk in such an an admiring tone about their guns like other guys talk about their cars, or a boat they might have.  And their reaction to Obama's announcement today???  They are running around trying to buy assault rifles before any ban goes into effect.  I had a manger call into our office frantically asking one of our gun lovers, where should he go and what should he do to circumvent any ban....

I just asked these guys today , point blank...Why do you think you have to have a gun or an assault weapon in your home?   And I finally got an answer that I think pretty much defines the gun mentality.....They need it for protection, from any bad guy that might want to break into your home.....but it goes beyond that..........These guys told me the govt. has automatic weapons, so I NEED TO HAVE THE SAME

So there it is finally.....the paranoia, that if the government comes for you , you have to be prepared...( and just for the record I don't live in the South, I live in San Diego)

A thousand Newtown massacres is not going to change this is deeply ingrained.....and very discouraging......

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

to think that if they have to have what the government has, they have tohave  nuclear missiles, jet fighters, big ships and submarines, as well as tanks and armored personnel carriers?  Why stop with a semi-automatic rifle and a high capacity magazine?

are atypical for the area,  a couple hunt, most don't own guns.  We're also an enclave of Democrats surrounded by Republicans.

The local population has all sorts of big guns, grenade launchers, things that can get a person arrested, and does from time to time.  I'm just a short trip down the highway from the youtube gun guy, Keith Ratliff,  that was found shot dead.  Folks take their guns seriously.

Typical college high jinks include bomb making.

I really don't need to go to a gun show, just the local flea market.  There was an ATF sting there just recently.

of mine so he could go to a gun show once. Interesting experience. He bought 2 SKSs for $300. It was like a buy one get one free deal. In his defense they were for an art project at the art institute. He was never able to use them anyway because the art institute doesn't like it when students bring ak-47 look alike guns to school. He had to make molds of them and now they adorn the wall above his couch.

What are they, sheep? If they wanted one, why didn't they buy one years ago?  If ownership of parrots were being banned, would they rush out and buy a freaking parrot?

gun, as far as I know, until the ban on automatic weapons. He had to rush out and buy an Uzi while he still could. For what? I don't know, but he had to have one before he couldn't.

So he put that thing under our bed.

Whenever I was in the bed, there was always that ghost of a monster underneath me taking all my attention. And that is when you absolutely don't want anything ELSE long and hard stealing the attention.

Eventually, I had to move out for my sexual sanity.

I hope he enjoys cuddling up to his automatic weapon.

She is the reason the Newtown massacre hit me so hard, I just can't imagine anything so horrible happening to her, I don't even want to think what those parents are going through....As Presidnet Obama says we owe it to our children to be able to protect them...

      •  tvdude - your co-workers are out of luck (4+ / 0-)

assault weapons are sold out across the US and there is a 12 month backorder for the most popular models. The used market is still very active, although prices are up because of the lack of new supply. If they find an assault weapon to buy they are also going to find it difficult to purchase ammunition. The most popular sizes of ammo are also sold out. There has been a national run on guns and ammunition that started the day after the Newtown tragedy.

All the popular military calibers basically, but even fucking .22lr are hard to find right now where I'm at.  All the bulk ammo is being bought up.  This shit is crazy and probably even more effective than an actual ban on anything.

the federal government is complete nonsense talking. That's not going to happen in the US.

However, don't ever think that well armed locals can't compete with modern weapons. I recall some skinny guys in black pjs, sandals, and AK47s that made my life hell even though I could call in air strikes and artillery. And we have seen in the middle east lightly armed citizens fighting advanced weapons, and winning.
