A few weeks ago on an impulse, I bought the domain name, quitthenra.com." The idea was to set up a website that would encourage NRA members to relinquish or not renew their membership because of the sheer insanity of the leadership and/or the corporate control of the organization. The pro-gun lobby has clearly been weakened by recent events and, especially, by their response to them. They boast a large membership, which, along with the huge amount of funding they get from the gun industry, gives them their clout in Washington. If their members start quitting in significant numbers, it would be a blow to their power and influence.
Some thoughts about the website:
1. A place where members could send an email to the NRA quitting their membership or promise not to renew their membership, perhaps with copies to their US Senators and Representatives. The number (and location) of these members could be tallied in real time.
2. Links to and summaries of articles describing the NRA's latest abomination (for example, think the ad referring to President Obama's kids) with the heading, "NRA Member: Doesn't this Embarrass You?"
3. A list of prominent people who have quit the NRA in protest along with those who are still members. For the latter, people could send them an email encouraging them to quit the NRA.
4. Links to organizations who oppose the NRA or work for gun control and, perhaps, a mechanism for making contributions.
I do not have the time now or the expertise to set up and run such a website. If any kossack here would like to and would like to use the QUITtheNRA.com domain name, please message me here.
Besides telling me what a brilliant, stupid or redundant idea this is, comments might also suggest ideas for the website. Those could be helpful to whomever might organize the effort.
