It begins with a promise. The one I made to myself after the Sandy Hook shootings.
I will not forget. I will support gun control. I will get involved.
Last week I attended a grassroots community meeting on gun violence in Lacey, Washington. http://www.theolympian.com/...
This week I decided to make a linoleum block poster.
It begins with an idea "Stop the Madness.... Now"
This becomes a pencil sketch with letters inverted for printing.
The drawing is taped over carbon paper and placed on a blank linoleum block.
Transfer the drawing to the linoleum surface by tracing it with a ball point pen.
The block is then carved, untouched surfaces will be the inked design, and the carved areas will show as bank paper.
Black ink is applied by brayer to the carved block.
The inked block is placed on blank paper and placed in the press where pressure is applied.
A second block for the "NO" slash circle is carved and inked in red.
After the black inked design dries, the red slashed circle is printed over the weapon.
And the print is finished.
It felt good to employ the old fashioned printing press to fight back against the terror of gun violence. If the pen is mightier than the sword, then may the printing press prevail over the assault rifle.
We need to speak out with all the modalities at our command.
