The GOP is resolved to the fact that they can't win without cheating. So they cheat. Virginia republicans pushed through a measure in the 20-20 Senate to make it easier for them to redistrict. They waited until Democratic Senator Henry Marsh, a 79 year old civil rights activist, left to attend the inauguration on Monday.

Wonderful.

It's time for us to begin acting on the cheating strategies of the GOP.

It's time for us to get serious about state and local politics. At least as active as we are for national. Because these assholes are dismantling democracy beginning at the state  level. Were it not for their gerrymandering, Pelosi would have the gavel today and we wouldn't be arguing about the debt ceiling. Or immigration. Or DOMA. Or a jobs bills. Or tax rates for rich people. Or the corporate tax rate.

STATE and local politics is killing us at the federal level and it will get worse as the years go on, as GOP realizes that demographically they cannot win without imposing a severe handicap on its opponents. The time to get geared up in NOW. This isn't going to get any better (unless we get active). Are you in?

If you haven't joined the State and Local Action group, I ask you to please consider it. And contrary to DK protocol, I am asking that you rec this diary.

In the coming weeks (by the end of February) I'll be making an announcement about some exciting new developments that will help us organize at the state and local level; actually educate people at the very grassroots level; compete with the rightwing radio spin machine; and help state and local candidates who lack support in their races.

It's time to get serious about this stuff, folks.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I'm going to a Virginia meetup on Sunday.  I don't know what, if anything, can be done about the Virginia Rethugs' little stunt yesterday or the even more horrendous one the Pennsylvania Rethugs are trying to pull.

You nailed it when you said:

I hope they are enough lady-Virginians willing to vote against Kookanelly for Guv this fall, but we also have to elect a Dem. legislature.  Not sure how--they gerrymandered my district to the point where we lost our legislator of many years' standing (Ken Plum) and now have no legislator at all.

Its not cheating or shenanigans...it was all perfectly legal and once again the Democrats are standing around with their thumbs up their ass which is why we have the House districts gerrymandered the way we do now.

Thanks for the call to action. We need to take the fight to these yahoos and raise awareness to team blue who are winning the national fight but getting buried at the local politician level.

up their ass? They pushed a  bill through the Senate while a single Democratic senator was out of Richmond. Do you want the 20 Dems to just sit in the chamber 24/7 just in case the GOP decides to shove an announced mid-decade redistricting measure through the Senate?

unconstitutional and won't survive court challenges if McDonnell signs it....the state constitution is pretty clear that redistricting is to be done every 10 years, and since it was done in 2011, there's really no way to say that 2013 is ten years later....

spend the next legislative session doing a McConnell/Boehner on the VA Republicans--block everything they try to do and make the Lt Gov break the deadlocks.  He may just be pissed enough at the Cooch and Company to side with the Dems.

If McDonnell signs this new map into law, could it be blocked with a referendum?

Just talked to one of Watkins staff members, & that is what she said.  Republican Rep John Watkins sponsored the bill & rammed it thru while Senator Marsh was gone....for the day.

She also said the same thing was done to Watkins in his district.  When I asked her if this was paycheck, she
    said it was.

Red mapping and/or gerrymandering is what you do, when you can't win by popular vote....let's face it.  It's the old/new Republican playbook.
