The usually-reliable Talking Points Memo is reporting that Majority Leader Reid has agreed on a "compromise" with Senate Minority Leader McConnell that would allow the Republicans to continue obstructing all Senate business. If this agreement holds, the movement for Senate reform to require the talking filibuster will have failed. The excuse being offered is that this "bipartisan" "reform" is needed to preserve the rights of Democrats when they are in the minority. Does anyone really believe that? Even Reid? The same Republicans who just shoved through a redistricting bill in Virginia when one Democrat was attending the inauguration, and who are openly conspiring to rig the electoral college will suddenly become not evil unscrupulous power-hungry demagogues and respect minority rights should they come to control a Senate majority?
This is a betrayal of all of us who worked and contributed to help the Democrats hold the Senate. Reid needs to know that he is has outraged the overwhelming majority of his party here, and that his job as Majority Leader is in jeapardy. If your Senator is a Democrat, call him or her today and ask him to insist on the Merkley-Udall-Harkin filibuster reform, and to withhold his or her vote from Reid as Majority Leader if he continues this betrayal.
