...this is an open thread. Nothing is off topic.
What food did you most crave as a kid and do you still?
As many of you know, I'm a foodie. I blame it on my super-sonic sense of smell which I'm sure increases the pleasure on my taste buds. Anyway, my childhood was filled with numerous food memories. I was born in the 50s and grew up with the rapid refinement and convenience of food. I thought TV dinners were awesome. Swanson chicken pot pies were a treat. The proliferation of kid's breakfast cereals was an unmatched explosion on grocery shelves. I loved them all. We begged our parents to buy them. They splurged on the single serving variety pack and we fought over anything coated with sugar; Frosted Flakes, Sugar Pops, Lucky Charms, Count Chocula... And then the drive-ins offered cheeseburgers and fries plus root beer floats or soft serve ice cream. That was our Sunday night family treat, to go to one of the two drive-ins in town and get ice cream.
Another food bonding experience for me was elementary school lunch. I did not have Beaver Cleaver's mother. My mom was raised in a government boarding school on the Navajo reservation from the age of 6 or 7 until she graduated high school. I think she never learned the sense of preparing regular meals for us. I vaguely remember eating some breakfasts at home and occasional dinners. So a big food memory for me was hot lunch every school day. My parents winced at the cost so I offered to work in the lunch room to get free lunch. The food was glorious. Not the crappy institution-tasting operations today. This was food cooked from scratch by the nicest, plumpest ladies in white uniforms ever. Open-faced hot dogs with two scoops of mashed potatoes on top plus melted cheese! I don't recall being excited about the veggies, not sure they were even there. I wanted to marry the sloppy joes. There were many wonderful rotated main dishes but those two were my favorites. Two dessert mentions here: chocolate cake and apple crisp, both washed down with cold, cold whole milk. All this followed by recess. It didn't get any better than this for me as a kid.
In high school I adopted very healthy eating habits so to this day I don't indulge in many of the food disasters of my youth. I mostly avoid desserts and candy. I avoid processed food preferring to make it myself from scratch or finding restaurants that do so. So I'd have to say the thing I crave and can't resist from my childhood is a cheeseburger and REAL french fries. Not those skinny fries that taste like tiny grease delivery systems. I like actual fresh potatoes, hand cut and fried twice. I routinely sacrifice my skinny waist goal for french fries.
Here I've limited myself to five fries, trying to offset whatever I can from the massive cheeseburger there on the right. Oh baby.
Those five fries came from this plate I ordered for the table. I could eat my weight in those fries.
So what do you crave from your childhood?
