  • What you missed on Sunday Kos ...

Lowry to Krauthammer: "Who's your favorite liberal columnist?" Krauthammer: "David Brooks."

  • Some things you may not have learned in school:
Reading, Writing & Religion II – a new report by the Texas Freedom Network — investigates public schools in Texas and the results are mind boggling. School kids are taught that the Bible gives scientific proof that the Earth is 6,000 years old, and the United States was founded as a Christian nation based on biblical Christian principles.  At least one district’s Bible course includes materials suggesting that the origins of racial diversity among humans today can be traced back to a curse placed on Noah’s son in the biblical story of the flood.
  • Somewhere, Randy Johnson is laughing:
When he launched a white dove – a traditional symbol of peace – into the air in St Peter's Square, Pope Benedict XVI was probably not expecting that the effect would be immediate. And certainly he would not have expected the effect to be conflict.

But that is exactly what happened in the Vatican square yesterday afternoon, as an angry seagull attacked the bird as the Pope looked on.

The dove, released at the end of the Angelus prayer, managed to escape the seagull's clutches and flew away.

  • Condolences to family and friends:
Stanley Karnow, a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and journalist who produced acclaimed books and television documentaries about Vietnam and the Philippines in the throes of war and upheaval, died on Sunday at his home in Potomac, Md. He was 87.
  • On today's Kagro in the Morning show, Greg Dworkin joined us for discussion of his Sunday Kos piece on moving from reference to "Sandy Hook" or "Newtown" toward "12/14" instead, plust Republican attempts at joining the immigration reform debate, and the world of non-stupid parties. Then, more of the week's supply of #GunFAIL, and an invitation still more in the new FL state law forbidding local restrictions on gunfire on private property. Also, the DC Circuit court's decision that's poised to invalidate decades of practice in recess appointments.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

saw two doves released.  One fluttered over to the wall and seemed to perch there.  The second barely fluttered out of his hands and went and sat just below the window sill.  There seemed to be a bird that flew in and out of the shot between the camera and the birds on the side of the building, but no attacks, no issues, and the Pope went back inside.

I'd say maybe the link was broken or went the wrong place but it was titled the same as the piece here - that the bird released by the pope was attacked.

      I remember Randy Johnson's pitch.

...... but also Dave Winfield who wound up killing a seagull playing catch in 1983.

The best line came from Billy Martin who - in asserting that Dave Winfield could not have struck the gull on purpose - said, "He hasn't hit the cutoff man all year".

"We should pay attention to that man behind the curtain."

I thought they taught that he was Lord of the Universe. These fundy LDS dudes are scary. I've driven through Colorado City a few times; your every move is watched. The guys have so many wives, their homes are as big as motels.

If you want to know where SB 1070 comes from here in AZ, just read the rants of fundy Cleon Skousen, who said only white Mormon men can save democracy. Not women, not blacks or Mexicans, certainly not LGBT. So stay the heck outta here! That's the foundation of SB 1070, written by Sen. Russell Pearce, a disciple of Skousen's.

Accommodations will be made for those who are unable to participate in the march which will lead to Jones Street where the North Carolina General Assembly is located (The General Assembly drafts and legislates the state laws of North Carolina).

    •  There was no gull. Not sure what that was all (0+ / 0-)

about.  The pope released the dove, which was obviouly confused, and it tried to perch on the wall of the building.  While it fluttered there, the shadow may have looked like the wings of a gull, but it was just a shadow.  Finally the dove worked its way back to a ledge in front of the pope's window.

I have to admit watching because I thought it would be a raptor mis-identified as a gull, like perhaps a peregrine (nice grey wings and all).  Believe me, I looked hard for the other bird.  It's just a shadow.  No wonder no one trusts the media...
