Tuesday!

Itzl AlertingAs you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here.  We care!

If you'd like to be part of the Itzl Alert Network, please leave a comment asking to join, or send us a message asking to join. We'd love to have you. The bigger our network, the less likely someone will be stranded all alone.

Thunder crashing!  Lightning flashing! And nary a drop of the wet.

The cloud cover has warmed things up, so there's that.  No ice!

I've gotten deeply into the contracts for OctopodiCon - we have some top notch talent coming to teach classes, do demonstrations, and generally make this a fine event.

The beginning and the end of planning for OctopodiCon are always the busiest - setting things up, followed by a long few months of expected things, and then the mad dash to get it all set up because of last minute changes.

I do hope no one dies this year!

Weather and long range plans...what are yours?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.
Rescue this diary, and add a note:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from Rescue?
Choose where to republish this diary. The diary will be added to the queue for that group. Publish it from the queue to make it appear.

You must be a member of a group to use this feature.

Add a quick update to your diary without changing the diary itself:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary?
(The diary will be removed from the site and returned to your drafts for further editing.)
(The diary will be removed.)
Are you sure you want to save these changes to the published diary?

              According to Wikipedia, Steampunk is:

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery,[1] especially in a setting inspired by industrialized Western civilization during the 19th century. Therefore, steampunk works are often set in an alternative history of the 19th century's British Victorian era or American "Wild West", in a post-apocalyptic future during which steam power has regained mainstream use, or in a fantasy world that similarly employs steam power. Steampunk perhaps most recognizably features anachronistic technologies or retro-futuristic inventions as people in the 19th century might have envisioned them, and is likewise rooted in the era's perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art. Such technology may include fictional machines like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or the modern authors Philip Pullman, Scott Westerfeld, and China Mieville. Other examples of steampunk contain alternate history-style presentations of such technology as lighter-than-air airships, analog computers, or such digital mechanical computers as Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace's Analytical Engine
For easy mental reference, think the technology used in the movie Wild Wild West.

            •  It's a convention (5+ / 0-)

a gathering of people in a hotel for three days.  This convention is devoted to Science Technology Engineering Art and Magic (or Math....) in the subculture of steampunk.

Steampunk is a diverse subculture of people who use the tropes and images and symbols of the early Victorian through WWII eras to make things, explore the sciences, invent things, dress up, play music, dance, and socialize with the manners and games of the eras updated for modern or futuristic times.

In literature, it's known as Victorian Science Fiction, and has its roots in Jules Vern, H. G. Wells, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and leafs out to modern authors like K. W. Jeter, China Mieville, Cherie Priest, Patricia Wrede, and Tee Morris/Pip Ballantine.

There's a strong children's component (called the Junior Sprockets, they earn badges and wear lab coats....).

OctopodiCon teaches people STEAM with neo-Victorianish flair.

  •  Good morning! (6+ / 0-)

Supposed to go up to about 80 today. So we're going to enjoy the warm weather while we have it. IT's supposed to cool off again on Wednesday. Hopefully my lungs will adjust without being a pain and shutting down.

Caedy is sick, not sure if it's a cold or the flu yet. We're hoping she doesn't share and gets over it quickly.

So we got some new listings from the Realtor. One has a walkability rating of 74! The others are in the single digits, so that's the one we're going to be pushing for. There's three grocery stores less then a mile away (Sav-a-lot is .2 miles!), the library is next to the Sav-a-lot. There's also an adult/community/vocational school .3 miles away, which will be good for Draco in the next year or so. The Mcdonalds Caedy will be transferring to is .8 miles away. So while it's a bit more pricey, it will mean much lower transportation costs. It also looks like it's very near the VA, which will be useful for Caedy given she can get hired there. So keep your fingers crossed for us please.

My long range plan is to get rid of this cold forever.

Don't know why this one just hammered me down for a day and a half, but all I wanted to do was sleep and have chicken soup.  I'm much better now.
