On several occasions, I've brought you the rantings of Kevin Swanson, host of one of the more popular fundie-oriented web radio broadcasts, Generations Radio. Well, he went way off the deep end on Monday's show. He told his buddy, Dave Buehner--the same guy who claimed a few weeks ago that gays should get the same treatment as murderers, rapists and child molesters--that if Colorado legalizes civil unions, it could be the start of a slippery slope that could lead to homeschooled kids being taken from their homes and given to members of NAMBLA. People for the American Way got a clip.
Swanson: You need to understand the agenda here. What’s happening is they want homosexuals to be able to be involved in adoption and foster care as much anybody else. So picture a nice little homeschool family, just trying to do the right thing. An anonymous tip comes in, social services swoops in, they grab the kids in the year 2022 and the kids get remanded into a home with homosexuals and these particular homosexuals happen to be tied into NAMBLA and other things. You know what’s going to happen. There will be proper indoctrination into a certain kind of worldview, shall we say.
Buehner: One that the Bible calls for capital punishment. That kind of worldview. It’ll be a tragedy in that house.
Swanson: Yeah. It’s a tragedy. It’s a tragedy. And I think there are a lot of concerned parents. There are concerned Catholic parents. There are concerned homeschool parents. And especially when you get a Regnerus study that comes out and says they’re ten times more likely to be touched sexually by a parent in a homosexual home than, you know, the normal American secular home. Wow. That’s frightening.
Tells you something about how far Swanson is grabbing for straws--the Regnerus study was so badly flawed that an audit conducted for the journal that ran it
concluded it should have never been published.
Listen to the whole thing here (warning, self-downloading file). It turns out Swanson isn't that concerned with such minor details as the validity of studies because, as he puts it, "we're not going to debate God's word." He and Buehner also blamed our education system for the increasing acceptance of homosexuality in our society--the more educated you are, the more likely you are to support gay rights. Hmmm, ya think? Sounds like this guy is a younger version of Fred Phelps.
This is pretty serious business. By Swanson's count, over a million people listen to him. And a good number of them live in the bubble of filtered Internet service, private school/Christian school/fundie-oriented homeschooling for their kids, and listening to only Christian radio. In other words--this claptrap is getting a lot of ears.
