That newly minted Texas Senator Ted Cruz is something of a lunatic is not exactly news. This is, after all, a man who seriously believes that George Soros and the UN are plotting to take our golf courses away. But looking at his antics since he took office, it's pretty clear the man is also a demogogue of the highest order, willing to spew out any garbage as long as it gets the Tea Party and the other bottom feeders of the right riled up. Witness, after all, his calling John Kerry and Chuck Hagel, two highly decorated Vietnam combat verterans, "less than ardent fans of the U.S. millitary." This despite the fact....well, I'll let Steve Benen put it best:

Perhaps Ted Cruz would benefit from a reminder about the men he's attacking. John Kerry is a decorated war hero who was awarded combat medals including the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts. Chuck Hagel is a decorated war hero who was awarded combat medals including the Vietnames Cross of Gallantry, two Purple Hearts, Army Commendation Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.

Cruz, meanwhile, who apparently considers himself an "ardent fan of the U.S. millitary," has never worn a uniform, except maybe on Halloween.

Ouch. And here's Bill Maher with his own take:
People say America is a violent country, but Ted Cruz accused wounded Vietnam vets John Kerry and Chuck Hagel of having insufficient patriotic pep, as opposed to Ted Cruz, and so far no one has punched him in the face.

I think that says something pretty nice about Vietnam vets.

If I were Ted Cruz, and I was waiting for the elevator, and the doors opened, and Hagel or Kerry was the only other passenger, I'd probably take the stairs

Sound advice. But Cruz clearly doesn't care about pissing Hagel off, as evidenced by his despicable out of context attacks on Hagel today. And even though he was clearly full of B.S., he doesn't care, because, as Joan Walsh points out, he's pleased the folks he really cares about.

The right, of course, ate it all up. "Ted Cruz Stuns Hagel with Al Jazeera 'Bully' Bite," Fox Nation screamed. "Ted Cruz shows that Hagel slandered both Israel and the U.S.," shrieked Powerline. "HAGEL IS AS BIG AN IMBECILE AS OBAMA," shrieked one Twitter look with an Andrew Brietbart avatar.
For a demogogue like Cruz, that's mission accomplished. And Cruz has proven himself such a shameless demogogue in so short a time that Josh Marshall can't help but wonder:
It's surprising to me that Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) wasn't born in the same year Sen. Joe McCarthy died. Can reincarnation still work that way?
You know, they do kind of look alike...

But even if Cruz isn't the reincarnation of the most unlovable drunk in Wisconsin (or maybe old Joe did a little Time Lord trick and got himself a new body, if we're going to speculate), one can be sure he's doing the old Commie-baiter proud. And he hasn't even been in the Senate a month yet. Who knows what he can come up with next?

Will someone pull a Joseph Welch and ask Cruz if he has no sense of decency? Only time will tell...

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

His daddy fought for Fidel Castro.  Joe McCarthy would have had his ass blacklisted.

but McCarthy was in another league. He took on Hollywood, he had people in the streets and halls of Congress living in fear of the HUAC. Cruz is a joke and everyone knows it. So to push the "cloth" metaphor McCarthy was an ugly pair of pants but Cruz is a pair of underpants.

What's wrong with America? I'll tell you. Everything Romney said was pre-chewed wads of cud from Republicans from the last 30 years and yet he managed thru a combination of racism and selling the (false) hope of riches to get 47% of the national vote.

that seeking out people of color who happen to be as crazy as the craziest white Teahadi in the tent as a litmus test for going forward isn't going to help them make inroads with minority groups that don't vote for them for policy reasons.

Ted Cruz is classic white College Republican planning the diversity push-back stategy realized.

"Look, we can't be racist, see... look there! We got a black guy! Oh, and a brown guy too!"
It's mistaking gathering lockstep with Limbaugh people of color around the tent whose main job is to make you feel good about yourself and that you are doing the right thing just by being who you are with having a diversity policy.

Watching Ted Cruz in that Hagel Senate hearing I felt like I was watching another Allen West, but with a higher pitfall factor. Any potential help a Governor Brian Sandoval in Nevada or Senator Marco Rubio from Florida might give you with their faux reasonable schtick goes out the window if Ted Cruz suddenly gets Michelle Bachmann-like media attention.

If someone would have done what Cruz would have done I would have said:

    "Oh THIS clip?"

    and played the WHOLE thing.

    And then said.

"You know, if you want to use something I said in an interview, it would be helpful to use the ENTIRE answer to the ENTIRE question.  While this is the kind of thing a propaganda outlet like Fox may do, this is the United States Senate, which is responsible for governing the country.  Unfortunately, people like you have been elected.  I suggest you start doing your job instead of preening for your fundraisers. Yes, they'll be all atwitter because you played a severely edited clip, and sad to say, they won't see this harsh dose of reality you're getting.  Now go to your room and let the grown ups work now."

Big, BIG mistake.  He's a moron but we have to live with him in the Senate until 2018.  Additionally, I heard that he wants to make a name so he can run for President but I believe he was born in Canada.  Can anyone confirm that?

But he is unconstitutionally not allowed to do so. He was born in Canada. And unlike the crazy birthers, we actually have proof to show.

I do not know if his Cuban father became a naturalized U.S. Citizen before or after Ted Cruz was born, although it's worth noting that Cruz's dad actually fought FOR Fidel Castro during the Cuban Revolution before moving to the U.S. in 1957, and then turned against Castro immediately after he came to power in Cuba.

He was one of 3 Republicans to vote against John Kerry for SOS.  He said John Kerry isn't really a fan of the military.

John Kerry volunteered to go to Viet Nam & is the recipient of 3 Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star & a Silver Star.

Ted Cruz has never been in the military, but Chuck Hagel has.  He started out as an enlisted man, & ended up w/ two Purple Hearts.

Cruz 42.  It's still not too late for him to step up & go to Afghanistan.  Since he knows so much about the military, perhaps he should do the country a favor & show us how wars should be run.
