Here is Senator Durbin's sensible five point plan:
-Bar those with a history of serious mental instability or violent crime from owning weapons;
-Outlaw the sale of weapons that are strictly for military use and have no useful purpose in sport, hunting, or self defense;
-Ban magazine clips with more than ten rounds from civilian use;
-Restrict the number of firearms a person can buy in a month;
-Require firearms within the reach of children to have protective locks.

We can fight, call names, and argue like hell until we are blue in the face, but to get anything done, the majority will need to agree on a plan and then

Email from Senator Durbin:
Yesterday, the Senate Judiciary Committee held our first hearing on what to do to solve America's growing problem with gun violence.
Wayne LaPierre, the head of the National Rifle Association, made a preposterous assertion that universal background checks won't stop criminals.
LaPierre completely missed the point, and I immediately called him out on it.
If criminals don't purchase guns because they don't want to undergo a background check, we'll stop millions of felons from getting guns in the first place! Wouldn't we rather stop criminals before they act, rather than prosecuting them after they commit gun crimes?
Let Wayne LaPierre know that the American people support commonsense reforms like universal background checks before a firearm is sold.

Today, there are several loopholes that allow firearm sales to go through -- to anyone: rapists, convicted criminals, even terrorists -- without a background check.
Mark Kelly, Congresswoman Gabby Giffords' husband, reminded us yesterday that had the criminal behind the Tucson shootings -- an admitted drug user who was clearly mentally ill -- been subject to a background check, he never would have been able to purchase the gun he used to kill six innocent people and attempt assassination of Gabby.
We need to expand background checks to every potential gun purchase -- to make sure that only law-abiding citizens can buy guns.
And it's just like airport security: If the fact that we have background checks means that criminals don't buy guns at all, that's a victory. Just like we're happy that no one with a weapon can board an airplane before it takes off.
Yesterday's hearing proved what we already knew: We need to do something to curb gun violence in this country, but we still face an incredibly steep uphill battle.
But with your help, I'm confident we can get something done for the good of our nation and the safety of our families and children.
Thank you,
Dick Durbin
U.S. Senator
