Another Monday morning, another GUS diary so hello to all and I hope you enjoyed the weekend.  Some of us experienced a blizzard while others didn't and life went on just the same. Blizzards can be fun but in general I think they're overrated.  It snows a butt load (pretty!) and then you have to clean it all up.  It gets real old real fast.  Just ask gchaucer2.

While I was snowed in I looked ahead to today and found out February 11th is an important day in our lives for a number of reasons.  First off it's National Don't Cry Over Spilt Milk Day and as far as I can tell no one knows why the hell it exists so I'll skip right over that one. Secondly it's National White T-Shirt Day which came about during a UAW strike in 1937 and more information about it can be found here.  Not to be overlooked it's also National Peppermint Patty Day for all you candy lovers out there.

Lastly, it's National Inventor's Day.

National Inventors’ Day is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Thomas Alva Edison, who is one of the most valuable inventors in United States of America.   One of his many inventions was the incandescent light bulb, developed as part of an integrated system of electric lighting in the late 1800s.

In 1983 President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5013 which declared Feb 11th National Inventors’ Day. He told the Nation that, this day should be celebrated to recognize the inventors by ceremonies and activities.

Since Hollywood is much more fun than real life any day here's my favorite Tinseltown inventors, American or not. Yes, Willy Wonka leads the list as the crazed candy mogul of Wonka Candy Company and inventor of such candy conceptions as the Wonka Bar and Everlasting Gobstopper. His revolutionary secret chocolate waterfall mixing process still is the stuff of confectionery legend.  I would imagine he's probably celebrating National Peppermint Patty Day today.
The man behind the tool of James Bond's trade is none other than Maj. Boothroyd, known to audiences worldwide as "Q". His scenes with Bond are noted for his passion for his work and Bond's general uninterest.  Some of his more notable inventions inlude the jet pack from Thunderball and the Lotus Esprit Turbo submarine from For Your Eyes Only.
"Doc" Emmet Brown and his Flux Capacitor arrived in movie theaters in 1985.  Doc Brown was himself influenced by many famous inventors and scientists such as Copernicus, Einstein, Ben Franklin, and author Jules Verne.  Notably absent-minded he nonetheless achieves travel through time with his Flux Capacitor mounted in a Delorean to help Marty McFly return from 1955 to 1985 to save his family.
So to all you inventors out there, here's to you.  I'll be in and out of the comments today since there's still storm cleanup to be done. P

?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
