I decided to float a local project I'm working on, to see if people who follow the Kos Georgia tag are interested.  It isn't inately either a progressive or Democratic issue (in fact I count on getting people of a wide political spectrum involved in the project), although it does touch on environmental and smart growth issues.

There is a three mile Cobb county stretch of the Silver Comet trail which has not been completed.  It runs from the beginning of the trail at Mavell Road, to the PATH trail on the opposiite side of the Chattahoochee at the South Atlanta Road bridge.

PATH has already completed the link under the bridge.  When (or if) that three mile section is completed there will be a continuous mixed use trail from Alabama to the Beltline in Atlanta.

I'm on the board of the River Line Historic Area, which is mostly involved in environmental and historic preservation issues in the section of the river bordering Mableton, Smyrna, and Vinings.  We've decided to take on the completion of the trail as one of our primary projects.

I'd be particularly interested in getting cyclists, environmentalists, and people involved in smart growth involved in this.  Most of the political heavy lifting will have to be done here in Cobb County, but the finished trail will benefit the entire region.

Anyone interested in this?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

It is CRAZY that they haven't completed a bike link from the Silver Comet to downtown Atlanta. At rush hour, bike commuting from Cobb to downtown would actually be time-competitive with driving a car. Getting people to make this commute by bike would relieve some congestion on the roads and improve Atlanta's problematic air quality.

PATH has already completed the link under the bridge.

The South Atlanta Road bridge over the Chattahoochee? Really? That's great news!

At one time there was a proposal to put a bike path in the Georgia Power right of way that runs from the Bolton Road area southeast to the Howell Mill Road area. Is that still possible, or are the PATH trails in NW Atlanta a substitute for that?

The Georgia Power right of way can easily be seen on the Google Maps satellite view. The potential trail down the ROW could be something like this: http://www.nytimes.com/...

"The true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals." - Barack Obama

    •  You should walk that section with us soon (0+ / 0-)

I've never cycled or walked the PATH section on the other side of the river, but have been told it already connects with the Beltline.

We took a few RLHA people and Sierra Club people on a hike over the unfinished section.

We started at Plant Atkinson Road and South Atlanta Road, and walked to the spur of the SCT at the South Cobb Drive Publix.

There are no technical problems to connecting the trail to the PATH trail.  The challenges are political and, of course, where the money comes from.

We're talking about organizing more walks of the section of track to drum up support.  It requires moderate off road hiking ability, since fallen trees and overgrowth are found at intervals.

I've made preliminary contact with Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, and have an email in with Bike Cobb.  If you're interested in working on it, or even on doing one of the walks over the section with us,  you can email me at larryfeltonjohnson@gmail.com
