We just finished our first junior sailing class of the year in West Maui.  Seabury Academy's middle school takes a one week break and the kids get to go off and learn something outside of the classroom.  This is the fifth year they've had a group interested in learning to sail.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I remember pretty smooth seas and light winds off Lahaina, until you got out from the wind shadow.  Then it got a lot more fun.

Is that Lahaina in the background?

Obviously not at THIS time of year! College racing though ran from around St. Patrick's Day through Thanksgiving; most of the time we were bundled up.

    Great shots.

a buddy of mine (who wouldn't be caught dead on this site) brought a boat from Utah.  We sail it on a local lake (no nearby oceans!) and I've finally been able to cross off my oldest bucket-list item!

    -7.38, -5.38 (that's a surprise)

Well, at least I hope they're having fun sailing those Optimists.

We've got several lakes around that are good for sailing.  I just need to get myself a dinghy and maybe interest my husband in sailing.

Good for you guys.  I wish I had learned to sail at your age.  I'd have probably made my trip around the world which I'll never do now, in part because I didn't grow up around boats.

I understand the theory behind kids participating in team sports but not too long ago I was thinking about my friends' grandchildren and came to the conclusion that they are being short changed.  Soccer is fine but it isn't enough.   It seems to me that team sports peak out in high school and after that adults go on to other things.  I live in the great NW and we live to be outdoors here.  Adults hike and sail and kayak and bike and camp and yes hunt and fish and all do sorts of other outdoor activities.  Most don't play team sports.   It rains so much that it seems everybody turns out for good weather.  Of course there are adult park league sports but that at least seems to me to be a small sub-set of what adults do for recreation.

If I had kids or grand kids to teach I'd make sure that they learned at least one water sport such as sailing and or kayaking--in addition to swimming because if you live around water that should be a given-- and a land sport like hiking, climbing or skiing or something that will follow will follow them for the rest of their life.

I didn't learn to sail until my 40s and although I can make the boat go forward it's a major handicap that I didn't learn when I was a kid.  Same with the other "adult" sports.  Sure you can pick-up skiing and all the rest as an adult but chances are you will never be as good as if you started young.

So "teach your children well."  Let them learn something besides soccer, basketball, baseball etc.  Have them learn activities that they will be doing in their 60s, 70,s and 80's if they keep their health.
