I was driving along today and wondering aloud "why do we need 10 obsolete aircraft carriers?" What standing army today is capable of invading the United States? Is Russia going to invade Europe? What is the reasoning behind having 10 out-of-date aircraft carriers which are seldom used?
Lets take a look at the facts.
First, the carrier is out of date as just one of China's DF-21D missiles will sink those carriers and there is no technology out there today which will stop these missiles. Russia has a different type of missile called the "Sizzler" which skims the ground at a sub-sonic speed until it gets to right outside radar range of the carrier. Then it speeds up to super-sonic speeds while it skims along a matter of feet above the water. Then the missile only turns on its radar when it gets within several hundred feet of the carrier. While approaching the carrier, the missile makes violent moves side to side so it cant be intercepted by anything on the ship. Not that there will be any time to intercept this missile moving at Mach 2+ or over 2.5 miles per second.
Second, why do we NEED 10 aircraft carriers? Why cant we do with 5 or 6?
Billions spent each year on aircraft carrier and not enough money going to cancer research. If Hitler or Stalin was in power today an argument could be made for such a superior fleet, but how can anyone argue they need this much firepower in modern times?
