Today, in a few state college newspapers, half page ads ran lambasting Pat Roberts for his vote against the Violence Against Women Act. The ad, which simply reads:
22 Senators Decided To Vote
Against The Violence Against
Women Act
Senator Pat Roberts,
On Behalf of Hundreds of Women
in XYZ County who Suffered
Domestic Violence in 2012:
2014 isn't that far away.
We highlighted the county of the University in which the ad ran.
Some ads will be delayed because of the snow storm, but following through on my everywhere deserves a debate strategy, it at least puts a face on an issue I care about.
Over the past few weeks and years, many of us here in the midwest have noted in our diaries a feeling that being in the midwest makes you feel "alone". A democrat once sent me a message proclaiming that admitting to those around him he was a democrat in Rural Kansas was akin to coming out of the closet. From his email:
I keep thinking I'll put up yard signs, but admitting I'm a democrat could be a real killer for my business. I don't even know if I'd be welcome in church on Sunday. It's that Republican around here.
Recent diaries on here have pointed out the same, because the feeling is that the midwest won't change.
And maybe it won't change in a hurry - but I have to believe part of the real issue is that the debate just isn't being taken to them. When you only hear one side of an argument, it's very difficult to reach a fair conclusion.
So, today through next Thursday, with ads in all the major college papers, we're firing a first shot.
There are too many people who need a voice in the process to just give up.
To see one of the first ads to run, printed in the Manhattan, Kansas (K-State) Collegian, it's up online now: http://www.kstatecollegian.com/...
We're all set for the March 15 meetup, and I look forward to seeing many of my fellow Kansas Kossacks there. We are currently planning an April meeting it appears in Springfield, Missouri.
