On Friday night, Red River High School in Grand Forks faced Fargo's Davies High School in the North Dakota state hockey semifinals at the University of North Dakota's Ralph Engelstad Arena. Three Red River High students apparently thought it would be a funny idea to dress up as Ku Klux Klansmen. Well, suffice to say that nobody else thinks it was at all funny.
Grand Forks Red River High School administrators said Saturday action has been taken against three students who dressed in Ku Klux Klan garb Friday night during the Roughriders’ state semifinal hockey game against Fargo Davies.
“We, as a school, are extremely disappointed with the behavior of these three students,” Principal Kris Arason said in a statement. “This behavior is not a representation of our school or student body.”
He also released results of the schools investigation, adding that administrators have contacted the students and their parents, and “appropriate action is being taken.” He did not specify the actions.
The students--all freshmen, according to other Red River High students--took off the hoods and robes after the other students around them demanded that they take them off. But they had them on long enough for UND student Shane Schuster to take a picture of them and post it to Twitter.
That picture has gone viral, with thousands of retweets.
In a statement, Red River High administrators say that the three students smuggled the robes into the arena, and only had them on for about 30 seconds to a minute. Schuster, however, thinks they were wearing that garb for as long as 10 minutes. School officials, however, say that based on reports from students, the 30 second timeframe is more accurate. Regardless of how long they had it on, it's safe to say those three are in a world of trouble.
