I figured out what annoys me about that Scroogled ad that appears here on DKos - it's a composite picture that almost but doesn't quite match up.
The eyes are placed at the wrong angles - the left eye is turned inward and the shape of the eye socket is larger than the right eye. The eyelids are wrong, too.
It bothers me enough that I am going to turn on Hide Ads.
Normally, I don't mind ads. I can ignore them easily. Since I don't watch TV, having the ads come up keeps me somewhat in touch with pop culture and other people's political stances. Ads are a passive way of keeping sort of loosely in touch.
I've never been inspired to purchase anything from an ad. Infomercials are a bit different.
I won't buy something straight from an infomercial. I will research it, see if I know anyone who bought one, and if the item is only available through the infomercial. Lots of times, it's available in a local store, and I can go eyeball it, read the box, and even look at the item itself, and decide if I want it.
Then I'll buy it from the promo site because many times, you get extras and it's cheaper, even with shipping.
But the ad doesn't cause me to buy it, only lets me know its available. I am the one who decides if I want it enough to spend my hard earned money on it.
So far, I've been pleased with everything I've bought.
But the Scroogled ad still bothers me enough I am willing to forgo my tenuous connection with pop culture and turn off ads.
