Yes, this is a rant inspired by this diary.

"Cardinal" Mahony? One step from being Pope? AND infallibility?

Every time this man says "Jesus," my stomach turns over. He is becoming the poster boy for organized religion. Which is too bad.

I remember the time after Vatican II. Nuns and priests actually fought in South American wars on the sides of the peasants. Nuns stood up for wome's rights. The Singing Nun reached out to popular culture. The Church took position after position for social justice. They called out for all humanity to unite, regardless of creed or color, in love.

The ancient, decrepit, corrupt Roman Catholic Church was briefly leading the charge for a New Age.

There were Catholics who meant something to me. Spoke to me. The Desert Fathers. Thomas Merton, mebbe most of all.

I was fucking PROUD to be a Catholic. Even for a good while after I left the church as a teenager.

What the fuck happened.

It's not sad.

It's disgusting.

And, of course, it's not just the Catholics. They just hog the headlines. I don't know of a church or denomination not touched with this same horror.

If there are to be End Times--fat chance, someone must have declared it every few months in my 60 years on earth alone--it will be the churches that bring it on.

Cuz if there is a god, he/she/it must be just as fucking tired of their bullshit as I am....

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
