The Daily Bucket is a regular feature of the Backyard Science group. It is a place to note of any observations you have made of the world around you. Insects, weather, meteorites, climate, birds and/or flowers. All are worthy additions to the bucket. Please let us know what is going on around you in a comment. Include, as close as is comfortable for you, where you are located. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the patterns that are quietly unwinding around us.

Lake Chabot, CA
Some History
Lake Chabot abuts Oakland, San Leandro and Castro Valley, CA.
As many of you know, there was a long established Great Blue Heron Rookery (communal nesting area) situated in the lake.
I reported last year that some Bald Eagles began nesting nearby and the Herons abandoned the rookery as a result of the Eagle overflights. All but one pair vanished, and that pair moved to an island in the Southern end of the lake where they successfully nested and fledged offspring.
( Final prior Heron diary is here)
March 3 Observations
This year, multiple pairs have found the island. As of Sunday, March 3, we spotted at least 9 Great Blue Herons, and 7 apparent nests. We feel that at least 2 of the nests are active nests, and have, for now, categorized the remaining five as probable nests. It appears that things are looking up again for the Lake Chabot Herons.
Your Turn
As usual, it is not time for your input. What are you seeing, hearing, and noting in the natural world lately. Please don't forget to tell roughly where you noted whatever it was you noted. Thank you.
